The benefits of Foundation Learning

• "Guidance and support are outstanding and tutorial arrangements are excellent." Ofsted, March 2008

• You will have the opportunity to study a range of subjects whichwill enable you to make informed choices about your future based onyour strengths. All courses within Foundation Learning are primarily concerned with installing self-belief, confidence and social skills, as well as quantifiable knowledge.

• This student-centred approach uses the College and work settings to provide a pathway leading to work, training or higher level education courses.

• Ofsted recently graded Weston College’s response to the needs and interests of learners, employers and the community as ‘outstanding’, as well as the promotion of social and educational inclusion (March 2008).

The Foundation Learning Tier

These Pre-entry, Entry and Level 1 qualifications can be used as a springboard for moving on to further achievement at Level 2, which can be the stepping stone to further education and employability. For some students achieving a Level 1 qualification is an important step in building confidence and learning new skills. The progression from Pre-entry to Level 1 is called the Foundation Learning Tier.

We recognise that all students have their own unique learning styles, progress at different rates, need to follow individual programmes and require varying degrees of support. So our courses are tailored to the needs and learning abilities of the individual so all students will have the opportunity to fulfil their potential and achieve the highest level appropriate to them.

“The Preparation for Work and Life course has
given me lots of ideas for when I leave. The staff
encourage me and give me belief in myself -
they tell me I can do it and I’ve gained a confidence
in myself which I used to lack.”

Francesca, Preparation for Work and Life course

Francesca came to the College after completing an Independent Living Skills course at a residential College to develop her interest in hospitality. She has a real enthusiasm for the Preparation for Work and Life course and says she has met new friends and become more independent since joining Weston College.
