The Cert Ed/PGCE (Lifelong Learning) is an initial teacher training programme which will prepare you to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status, enabling you to teach in any post-16 environment.
It is appropriate for:
- Further Education staff or private training provider staff
- Industrial or armed forces trainers
- Nurse or community tutors.
You will be part of a lively group of teachers from a range of different vocational backgrounds. The course uses discussion and debate as well as lots of different practical exercises to help you expand the range of your own practical teaching skills.
Course structure and content
Year one
- Introduction to teaching and learning
- Enabling learning and assessment
- Theories and principles of enabling learning
- Specialist area review.
Year two
- Wider professional practice
- Curriculum design in lifelong learning
- Continuing professional and personal development
- Student support.
During the first year of the course you will focus on developing your
practical teaching skills, including how to plan a session, choose
motivating teaching and learning methods and assess your learners
effectively.
In year two you will study wider issues relating to teaching in the sector, and develop your skills and understanding of ways to support
students. In both years you will engage in critical reflection of your
own professional development.

Entry Requirements
You will be expected to have a minimum of a Level 3 qualification in your specialist vocational area. You will also need a Level 2 qualification in English or Literacy (e.g. GCSE A*-C) and a Level 1 qualification in Maths (e.g. GCSE D-F).
During the course you should have access to a minimum of 150 hours of teaching experience in a post compulsory education and
training environment. As part of your assessment we will observe
some of your teaching practice.
Progression
On successful completion of this course you can apply to progress to a Masters programme in Education.
