skills. Taught in partnership with Hartpury College (UWE) you will
have the benefits of studying at a local college with excellent facilities associated with a commercial equine establishment (Badgworth Arena).

This course offers you personal, professional and academic development for advancement in your chosen career and will enable
potential industry contacts to be made.

Course structure and content

This work-related and degree level qualification provides you with the opportunity to develop the necessary personal, academic and technical skills to become a valued employee in the equine industry, which is a major area in the UK land based sector. During this course you will gain a broad knowledge of equine science and also develop a range of business skills.

Modules may include:

Year one

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Business studies
  • Animal genetics
  • Equestrian practice (to include 80 hours of work experience)
  • Animal nutrition
  • Equitation
  • Introduction to veterinary science
  • Introduction to animal biology (subject to previous qualifications).

Year two

  • Business principles
  • Equine event management
  • Equine management (to include 220 hours of work experience)
  • Equitation theory
  • Ethics and welfare
  • Statistics and research methods.

You will also partake in a Graduate Development Programme to
develop your academic skills to help ensure you are successful
during your course and at this level of study.

Entry Requirements

Offers will usually be based on UCAS tariff of 160 points from at least one of the following:

  • BTEC National Diploma/ Certificate/Award in a related area
  • Advanced/Extended Diploma in a related area
  • A Levels, preferably one of these would be in a biological science
  • Access to Higher Education course
  • Advanced Apprenticeship in a related area.

If you do not possess the relevant entry requirements, previous
recent experience may be taken into account. Applicants will be
assessed on an individual basis.

If you intend to progress to the Honours top-up stage you will also need Maths and English GCSE at grade C or above or an equivalent qualification. It is possible to study these qualifications alongside the Foundation Degree but you would be at an advantage if you obtained these before starting the course.

Progression

You may have the opportunity to continue your studies for a further year to complete an Honours Degree at Hartpury College in Equine Science or other Equine related Degrees, or to progress to a specialist area such as equine behaviour, nutrition, dentistry, therapies or veterinary nursing.

Alternatively, this course will prepare you for a variety of careers in the equine industry to include instructors, event organisers, equine product sales or marketing and PR.
