Why choose this course
We cover the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CEIH)
curriculum with a wide range of related subjects. The focus of the course is on developing the skills required to become and environmental health practitioner (EHP).
As you embark on this career choice from a wide range of backgrounds, Weston College and UWE are working together to
validate an accredited Honours top-up route delivered both full and part-time at the College.
In addition to participating in taught sessions students are encouraged to become active members of the CIEH West of England branch.
Course structure and content
Modules may include:
Year one
- Earth systems
- Micro-organisms
- Introduction to public health
- Food
- Environmental health law 1
- Analytical skills, which includes a field trip within the UK.
Year two
- Pollution, health and environment
- Health and safety
- Environmental health law 2
- Built environment
- Work-based learning, which includes a field based element.
Throughout both years the UWE Graduate Development Programme (GDP) will be included.

Entry Requirements
Offers will usually be based on UCAS tariff of 160 points from at
least one of the following:
- BTEC National Diploma/ Certificate/Award in a related area
- Advanced/Extended Diploma in a related area
- A Levels, preferably one of these would be in a science or technology subject
- Access to Higher Education course, including science at Level 3.
If you do not possess the relevant entry requirements, relevant
industrial experience may be taken into account. Applicants will be assessed on an individual basis.
If you intend to progress to the top-up stage you will also need
Maths and English GCSE C or above or equivalent. It is possible
to study these qualifications alongside the Foundation Degree.
However you would be at an advantage if you obtained these before starting the course.
Progression
- Pursue a career as a technical officer in the field of environmental health
- Progress to the final year of the Honours Degree in Environmental Health. If you wish to progress to the Honours Degree you will require Maths and English at GCSE grade C or above. Many students then move on to training with an environmental health provider for a further year. Once the professional CIEH exam and portfolio have been passed this will accredit you as an Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP).

- We will get your application through UCAS and may invite you to an interview or audition with a course tutor.
- We will let UCAS know what we decide about your application as soon as possible after your interview.
