Tourism Students Have Passport to Success
Travel and tourism students at Weston College tried their hand at being holiday reps last week as part of an exciting enrichment project.
Students studying on the BTEC National Diploma in Travel and Tourism course formed groups to act as professional holiday representatives and were given a series of activities to complete.
The group were asked to hold a welcome meeting, provide “guests” with information on an excursion trip, and produce display boards relating to the excursion. They then exhibited their work in a marketplace setting, presenting to other students in the class to “sell” their excursions.
The task was part of the ‘Role of Holiday Representatives’ module; students research the different types of holiday representatives and their roles and responsibilities, learning how to deal with customers in a range of situations.
Students also researched the legal responsibilities of holiday reps and their role in ensuring holidaymakers have a safe and enjoyable experience. The task allowed students to develop their research, creative and interpersonal skills as well as problem-solving, customer service and sales ability.
Madison Skidmore, aged 18 and a former Wyvern pupil, said: “I really enjoyed the holiday rep task as it’s an interest of mine. The practical side of it was really fun, such as making displays, undertaking a transfer speech and hosting a welcome meeting. I feel my confidence and presentation skills have improved through this task.”
The BTEC National Diploma in Travel and Tourism course allows students to explore a number of areas of the industry and is an excellent foundation for careers in tour operations, event organisation, passenger handling, marketing, customer service and retail.
Emily Higginbottom, aged 17 and a former Churchill pupil, said: “The course is really interesting and it’s really improved my self-confidence. The class all get involved in group work and the lessons are great fun. The tutors are always helpful and supportive!”
As part of the course students have the opportunity to undertake a week-long residential abroad together with the option to visit a number of top UK attractions. On successful completion of the course they can progress to a degree level course, such as the Foundation Degree in Tourism Management at Weston College, or begin a career in the travel and tourism industry.
