Sporty Students Selected for England Rugby Team

Three Weston College students have been selected to represent England in the prestigious Colleges Rugby Team.

Zoe Cutts and Rhiannon Tottle have been selected for Women’s Rugby and George Osborne for the Men’s Rugby, after attending the England Colleges Rugby Trials in a bid to become part of the national team.

British Colleges Sport encourages and enables students and colleges within the further education sector to develop their potential by providing high quality sporting opportunities and services.
Zoe, aged 16, is the youngest player on the team and is studying the BTEC First Diploma in Sport and Fitness at the College. She said: “I was really proud to have been chosen and it’s been a good experience so far.”

Rhiannon, aged 18, said: “I’m ecstatic at being selected to play in the England College’s team in my final year at Weston College and I’m really looking forward to the matches.”

Rhiannon is studying the BTEC National Diploma in Sport and Exercise. The girls, both former Priory School pupils, play Scotland later this month (February 27th) and then Wales later on in the year.

George, aged 17 and a former Churchill School pupil, is studying a BTEC National Diploma in Sports Coaching. He said: “We had two trials to get into the team which was really hard work, but the training weekend was really good.” George played his first game against Wales last week.

The students are now required to attend a number of development camps throughout the year as well as being available for both national and international fixtures. The training camp puts the players through their paces in preparation for the up and coming international fixtures.

George Sparks, Lecturer in Sport at Weston College and Assistant Coach of the Rugby Academy, said: “It’s fantastic to have three of our students selected for the national College’s team. They are an example to other students of what can be achieved through hard work, commitment and determination. Their success is proof of the high quality training students receive as part of the Sports Academy Programme at Weston College.”
The students were commended for their high standard of behaviour and commitment throughout the trials.
