Local School Pupils Tangled at College Enrichment Project
30 school pupils from Robert Blake Science College took part in an exciting enrichment project at Weston College this week.
The Year 8 pupils from Robert Blake Science College, based in Bridgwater, Somerset, were invited to attend an exciting enrichment day at Weston College to gain an insight into different career paths and the qualifications necessary to achieve their career goals.
The pupils visited the College’s Knightstone Campus in Weston-super-Mare and took part in a series of fun and exciting task and activities, with particular emphasis placed on the importance of education and the need for them to choose subjects to match their choice of career.
The pupils took part in a fun teambuilding task, the ‘Human Knot’, where they had to form a human knot and untangled themselves. This helped them understand the importance of teamwork in the workplace.
Jacob Callow said: “The tour was really interesting and the day couldn’t have been any better!” Jessica Kitch said: “It helped me choose a career and the day couldn’t have been more useful.”
The youngsters also enjoyed an in-depth tour of the College and took part in an interview session with College Student Ambassadors, with pupils interviewing them on College life.
After a lunch break the pupils took part in a fun benchball tournament in the College’s Sports Hall, to cement teamwork skills. They were then asked to create posters demonstrating what they had learned during the day, and presented these to their Student Ambassador. Kelsey Baker said: “Making the poster was really fun. The whole day was cool and fun!”
The event proved to be an overwhelming success with 100% of pupils saying they really enjoyed the day in their evaluation forms. Paul Harper, Progression Officer at Weston College, said: “This was echoed by 90% who said the event made them more likely to choose Weston College as their place of study for Further Education, which is fantastic as for the majority of them it was their first time visiting Weston College!”
Karen Warren-Williams, Work Related Learning Co-ordinator at Robert Blake Science College, said: “The trip to Weston College was brilliant! I personally was so impressed that I am bringing my daughter to the next open day. Most of our students assume they will go onto our local college, my own daughter included, so it is good that they have the opportunity of choice.”
She added: “The students all enjoyed themselves and judging by the final session on future careers, they were all given food for thought. They certainly enjoyed the gym - this was a great way to show them the fun side of College. Overall it was a successful day and I thank the College so much for the opportunity!”
