Hairdressing Apprentices Put Forward for National Competition
Two Weston College hairdressing apprentices are in the regional heat of a national competition that could see them test their skills on a world stage.
Elliot Granger, 18, of Chop in Cheddar, Hannah Martin, 17, of Planet Hair, Locking, Lily Taylor, 19, Arcadia in Nailsea and Kelly Marie Frost, 18, Laura Henson, 18 took part in first round heats of the WorldSkills UK competition.
Level 3 hairdressing apprentices Laura Henson and Kelly-Marie Frost of BroadStreet Hairdressers in Backwell and Congresbury have made it through to the South West regional competition at Bristol College on June 25th.
Weston College Head of Apprentices in Beauty, Hair, Barbering and Nails, Tanita Veal, said: “ The top ten highest scoring competitors regionally will go on to the final competition at the NEC in Birmingham in November and they have done extremely well to get this far.”
The apprentices’ aim is to be chosen to take part in the WorldSkills UK Team and around 5,500 young people compete for a place in the British squad.
WorldSkills is the largest unique biannual competition in the world involving around 1,000 apprentices and students, aged 18 – 24 in 46 skill areas.
The British team is made up of world-class vocational competitors trained in a variety of skills including mobile robotics, graphic design, carpentry, catering and mechanics.
Apprentice hairdresser, Lily Taylor of Arcadia in Nailsea said: “I’m in my last year as an apprentice and it’s been very exciting to take part in the competition.”
