British Sign Language (BSL)

A qualification in British Sign Language (BSL) can open the door to many social, career and educational opportunities.

If you choose to study BSL at Weston College, you will benefit from being taught by our highly trained staff who have years of experience within the sector. You’ll also have the chance to practise your skills working with members of the deaf community.

You’ll be amazed how much you will benefit from having this skill. For an estimated 151,000 people in the UK who are deaf or profoundly hard of hearing, British Sign Language is the first or preferred language and means of communication. This means that we need more people to know and understand BSL than ever before. And, as well as learning valuable skills that will help you to communicate with members of the deaf community, this qualification could lead to jobs including support roles, teaching and interpreting.

Here’s what we can offer:

  • Support available via your own tutor to help you succeed.
  • As a Weston College student you'll also have access to all our facilities - including our Library, IT suite, welfare and employment support teams, Costa ...
  • All the benefits of studying at Weston College - including exclusive student discounts.

One Message, Different Voices

Take a look at this powerful film made by the staff of Weston College to show how important it is for everyone from different backgrounds to be included. The film shares heartfelt stories and interviews with a diverse group of staff, showing how accepting different identities and backgrounds can make a big difference. Its purpose is to encourage viewers to think about their own biases and work towards making our community more welcoming to all. We invite everyone, regardless of their background, to join us and be a part of our journey toward a more inclusive future.

Halo workplace logo

Our workplace champions the right of staff to embrace all Afro-hairstyles. We acknowledge that Afro-textured hair is an important part of our Black employees’ racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance. We celebrate Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, braids, cornrows, fades, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps. In this workplace, we recognise and celebrate our colleagues’ identities. We are a community built on an ethos of equality and respect where hair texture and style have no bearing on an employee's ability to succeed.
