Teaching Assistant Intermediate (Apprenticeship Level 2)

Introduction

A teaching assistant is responsible for supporting teaching and learning in the classroom alongside the delivery of the class teacher. Their role involves supporting the class teacher in the preparation of resources needed to deliver or support a lesson and assisting with children’s learning by supporting on a 1:1 or small group basis as directed by the class teacher. A teaching assistant is also responsible for providing feedback to the class teacher about a child’s learning, understanding and development. A teaching assistant has responsibility for promoting and maintaining the safeguarding of all children and adults in the school.

Entry Requirements

Apprentices need to be employed in a teaching assistant role where they are supporting teaching and learning particularly in relation to English, Maths and ICT. There are no other formal qualifications required to start this apprenticeship but you will undertake an assessment to ensure you have the ability to complete English Functional Skills at Level 2 and Maths qualification for Functional Skills level 1.

Functional Skills

Apprentices will be required to have or achieve level 2 English and level 1 maths and passed the exams prior to completion of their Apprenticeship. If Level 2 English has been achieved then development of further English will continue for the rest of the apprenticeship. If level 1 Maths has been achieved, the learner will be required to upskill to Level 2. If level 2 has been achieved then development of further maths skills will continue for the rest of the apprenticeship. You will also be required to achieve L1 for Functional Skills in ICT.

Duration

The Apprenticeship typically takes 12 to 15 months to complete. ProgressionCompletion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship enables learners to:

  • Apply for jobs in schools as a TA/LSA
  • Progress to the Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and learning if you are still volunteering or employed in a school
  • Progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning once you are in employment
  • Progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning
  • Progress to other courses such as the AQA Intermediate Counselling Skills for Children and Young People
  • Study GCSE or Functional Skills at Level 2 in English and Maths if you do not have GCSE Grade C or above in these subjects

Funding

Levy paying employers may fund apprentices on this programme from their Apprenticeship Account and non-levy paying SMEs through the co-funded option. There may be a small fee for some SME’s.
