Community access board views Winter Gardens plans

The Winter Gardens community access board met at Weston College last week to review the College’s proposed changes to the pavilion’s internal layout.

Bernard Doyle of View Architects presented his initial drawings of the building to the group, and detailed which areas will be refurbished, enhanced and available to the public.

He said: “We’ve been working with the Winter Gardens’ planning team and our ambition is to restore the original portion of the building back to its former glory.

“These drawings form an early snapshot of what we could create within the building, but they are subject to the contractor’s surveys which are currently taking place.

“There’s a considerable amount of space that will be on offer to the public, and it will provide great opportunities for community use.”

The cafe at the back of the Winter Gardens will remain after the redevelopment, and a new two-storey bar and restaurant facility with sea views will be created in the wing that formerly contained the Tourist Information Centre, which recently moved to the Tropicana.

The kitchens in this wing will be refurbished and provide food for the new bar and the ballroom.

The main entrance and reception area will be moved from the rear of the building to the wing that currently contains the View Bar, and a series of smaller rooms above this entrance will be reconfigured to create spaces for a variety of functions.

The ballroom will be refurbished and restored, with particular attention being paid towards improving the acoustics of the room. The lighting and sound systems will be updated to ensure that the building can host a wide range of events.

John Crockford-Hawley, Chairman of North Somerset Council and member of the community access board, was particularly impressed with the College’s plans.

He said: “2017 is shaping up to be a magical year for Weston-super-Mare.

“Across town many projects are starting and some will reach completion next year including refurbishment of the museum and leisure facilities in Dolphin Square. Even the Tropicana is shaping up for post-Banksy revitalisation.”

“The refurbishment of the Winter Gardens and these other works are all part of a bigger regeneration project that is just beginning to come together.”
