Weston College Changes the Lives of Over 200 People

Weston College’s ambitious campaign to create 200 apprenticeship opportunities for students in 100 days has come to a close, with the College gaining 230 apprenticeship pledges.

This is an impressive result which bucks the national trend, with apprenticeships being down 28% in 2018 according to FE News.

This campaign has seen a diverse range of opportunities created for learners, with new vacancies appearing in management, business administration, IT and adult care amongst many others.

Throughout the 100 days opportunities have been created for learners at different stages of their career, with apprenticeships ranging from Level 2 to Level 6.

There has been a wide span of businesses that have committed to the campaign including Wessex Water, the NHS and Greg Latchams.

One firm that has pledged is Bristol-based software and technology company One Big Circle. Emily Kent, Director of One Big Circle, said: “Thanks to Weston College’s 200 in 100 campaign we now have a fantastic Software Developer Apprentice in place, recruited from an excellent field of candidates.

“We were impressed with how the whole process was managed and supported, and we hope to recruit other apprentice roles through the College in the very near future.”

Thatchers were also part of the campaign, as the Somerset-based cider company pledged to hire eight apprentices. Emma Cox, Training Co-Ordinator, said: “Thatchers are proud to have introduced their young talent programme in 2018.

“As part of this programme, we are pledging to take on new apprentices across the business. Apprenticeships are enabling us to grow our own talent and provide more career opportunities for local young people - careers that they can be proud of.”

Clevedon based PureComms were supporters throughout the campaign, and featured in several promotional videos. Jane Vivian, Business Development Director, said: “Weston College has taken the time to understand our business and training needs, developing a bespoke apprenticeship programme for the business.

"We have successfully trained and recruited new members to the team and have seen a range of benefits to the business through ‘growing our own’ via an apprenticeship programme. We would highly recommend that any business (regardless of size or sector) considers apprenticeships as a way of bringing new ideas into the business and growing a loyal team. The personal service delivered by Weston College is incredible.”

Dr Paul Phillips CBE, Principal and Chief Executive of Weston College, said: “It is really exciting to not only reach our apprenticeship target, but to surpass it and create further opportunities for our learners.

“At Weston College, we aim to create brighter futures and this campaign is further proof of that as we are helping young learners take their first step onto the jobs ladder.

“One thing that has been noticeable throughout the campaign is that businesses are looking to upskill existing members of staff, as they seek to build their work force of tomorrow. We have also seen the popularity of our apprenticeship provision across sectors, and through this campaign we have been able to support businesses in sourcing talented apprentices.

“We are consistently looking at developing new relationships with organisations, and this campaign has seen several businesses join our business network. We are looking forward to progressing these further, and creating further opportunities for both students and businesses in the region and beyond.”
