WHAT DOES THIS COURSE INVOLVE

This apprenticeship, which includes a Level 3 electrotechnical qualification, will train you to use a range of electrical installation components. We’ll also work with you to develop your English and maths skills to the required level for the industry.

Apprentices will learn:

  • The principles, practices, and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables, and cords in electrical systems.
  • The practices and procedures for the preparation and installation of wiring systems and electrotechnical equipment in buildings, structures, and the environment.
  • The practices and procedures for planning and preparing to maintain electrotechnical systems and equipment.
  • The principles, practices, and legislation for the inspection, testing, commissioning, and certification of electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures, and the environment.
  • The principles, practices, and legislation for diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures, and the environment.
  • The electrical principles associated with the design, building, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems.
  • How to oversee and organise the work environment.

ASSESSMENT METHOD

You will complete assignments, produce a portfolio of evidence and take an end-point assessment. This is a robust, timed practical and theory assessment in sections. You will be required to perform a set of common tasks and procedures that a full-scope electrical operative might face when working in commercial or industrial premises or dwellings.

FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES

This programme could lead to several roles in electrical installation. Or you could enhance your skills by applying to join the HNC in Engineering (Electrical and Electronic Engineering) at University Centre Weston.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Entry requirements being a minimum of Grade 5 in English and Maths, and at least three other GCSEs at Grade 4 or above. Alternatively, completion of a pre-vocational program is accepted. Your initial placement will be determined not only by your academic achievements but also by any relevant prior experience in the specific trade and your performance during the college interview.
