Engineering Technologies, Diploma

The programme has been specifically designed to allow learners to progress from level two practical programmes into apprenticeships or further learning. It is a predominantly practical course at level three that builds on the skills that learners have acquired in PEO type studies. The course concentrates on developing high level technical abilities in machining and fabrication with units in advanced milling, turning and computer numerical control machining. The course has always been a very successful route to apprenticeships and includes a period of work experience where you will further develop your skills and workplace readiness.

What does the course involve?

The course involves mostly practical learning around machining, fabrication, welding and the use of computers in engineering. You will follow a curriculum designed to give you the skills and knowledge to successfully gain an apprenticeship as a machinist, fabricator or general engineer. You will build your skills around processes such as milling, turning and welding until you are proficient in the process and can work on your own safely and to a good standard.

How will the course be assessed?

The course is mainly assessed through recording what you are doing in the workshops and placing the evidence into a portfolio that you have assessed on an ongoing basis so that you know where you are on the programme and how well you are doing as well as what you need to improve on. There are two on-line exams that you will be well prepared for and entered into when you are ready. On demand resits are available for these in the rare case that you do not pass first time.

What future study opportunities and careers are there?

Learners progress from this programme go into many different sectors and some have chosen to enter University directly after this course. Most learners chose to complete their apprenticeship after the course, and we can help you find an opportunity at any one of our Blue Chip Employers or SMEs. Work experience plays an important role in giving you the chance to engage with an employer and secure an apprenticeship with them.
