Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up, Diploma

This occupational qualification provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills you need to work as a make-up artist. It builds on the knowledge and understanding of make-up artistry you gained at Level 2, enabling you to expand the scope of your technical skills and prepare for employment.

You will cover:

  • Airbrush make-up for the face
  • Camouflage make-up
  • Fashion, photographic and media make-up.

You will also have the opportunity to undertake a wide range of optional units to enhance your practical skills in hair and make-up application, and beauty techniques. These include face and body art, mehndi skin decoration, applying prosthetic pieces, styling and fitting postiche, wig services and fantasy hair design.

This qualification is based on Habia National Occupational Standards (NOS). It is recognised by the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) – the UK's largest beauty therapy trade body and professional association – and the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a make-up artist.

How will I be assessed?

You will undertake two online written assessments and formal practical assessments. You will have an online gradebook that you will keep up to date and use to manage targets throughout the year.

What could I do after this course?

You could work as a make-up artist in a variety of sectors, contexts and settings, including:

  • Beauty salons
  • Independent, self-employed, mobile or home-based
  • Film, print media, photographic studios, cat walks
  • NHS
  • Product manufacturing and training
  • Hospitals or care homes.

Or you could increase your skills by progressing to the Hair, Makeup and Prosthetics for Production FdA at University College Weston.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSE at grade 9-3, including English and maths at grade 4 or above.
