This course is taught at our fantastic South West Skills Campus, which has state-of-the-art facilities, used by construction companies of all sizes, to discover and develop their future talent.
Careers in the construction industry are enjoyable and rewarding and offer hundreds of different trade routes to suit your interests. This course will develop your practical carpentry skills and give you experience working with new tools and equipment that are used in the trade.
On this course you will develop your skills and knowledge in: quantities and communicating with others, understanding construction technology, carrying out first fixing operations, carrying out second fixing operations, carrying out structural carcassing operations and carrying out maintenance to non-structural carcassing work.
With mega-projects such as Hinkley Point C underway, and a need for 7,000 new homes in the North Somerset area, there has never been a better time to explore a new role in the construction industry.
How will I be assessed?
You'll be assessed through practircal skills tests, work observations, assignments, projects, and online assessments.
What could I do after this course?
After you've successfully completed this course you could progress onto a Level 3 Carpentry course to develop your skills further, or enter the industry with an apprenticeship.
Your course may be FREE if you live in the South West of England (including the West of England Combined Authority) and:
- You are defined as being unemployed.
- You are employed, or self-employed, and earn less than £17,374.50 annual gross salary or less than £18,525.00 (West of England Combined Authority postcodes).
- If you are 19-23 (all postcodes) or 50+ (West of England Combined Authority postcodes only) and do not hold a full Level 2 qualification.

A general understanding of the construction industry with an interest in carpentry and some basic hand skills. A previous Level 1 qualification is desirable, but not essential.
