Counselling, First Steps
This course is designed for people aged over 19 years and will equip you with the strategies needed to communicate effectively with children and young people. This course is ideal for anyone considering a career in counselling and introduces counselling skills in preparation for further learning or training.
You will learn about creative methods of exploration and techniques to manage common behaviours. You will develop effective skills to work with young people and support them with the pressures they may experience. You will study topics including legislation, multi-agency working and safeguarding, all with a focus on keeping children and young people safe.
You will develop core communication skills, learn about theories and processes, and be given the opportunity to practice a variety of strategies.
The evening courses will be delivered over six weeks, from 6pm-9pm, and this will include tutorials and participation in small and large group discussions.

- Listening and responding techniques
- Self-awareness
- Ethics
- Confidentiality
- Assessment method
- All work will be assessed through weekly activities.
Progression opportunities
Successful completion of this course allows learners to progress to the Level 2 Counselling Certificate.
