Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician, Apprenticeship
Through the completion of this apprenticeship, you can decide which of the following Engineering roles is best suited to your skills, and progress towards that goal:
- Electrical Technicians
- Mechanical Technicians
- Control & Instrumentation Technicians
- Wind Turbine Technicians
- Electrical System and Process Control Technicians
- Electromechanical Technicians
- Plant Operations Technicians.
You will have the opportunity to combine on-the-job training with study in a college environment. You will start by learning the basics across several different areas. For one or two days per week in the first year, you will be taught the technical knowledge and practical competencies needed to complete your apprenticeship.
Studying this course means that you will also be part of our Engineering Career Excellence Hub, which is endorsed by leading employers, who are actively involved throughout your whole training programme.
What does the course involve?
Taking place in our brand-new engineering workshops and labs, you will learn and develop new skills.
Depending on the company that you work for, your apprenticeship will cover several different disciplines such as turning, milling in the machine shop, CAD or CAM, CNC machining, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, electrical and electronics, maintenance, materials science, programmable logic controllers, composites, fabrication and welding.
You will also be responsible for keeping a high quality of your work, ensuring it is completed safely and to the budget requirements.
How will the course be assessed?
You will be assessed through workplace observations and practical tests. You will also complete online tests, assignments and produce a portfolio of evidence. This will be part of your end-point assessment.
What future study opportunities and careers are there?
Most students will progress into a technician-level position. You could also progress onto higher education, such as the degrees or degree apprenticeships on offer at University Centre Weston.
