Level 3
Senior Healthcare Support Worker, Apprenticeship
As an experienced support worker, you will carry out a range of clinical and non-clinical healthcare or therapeutic tasks, under the direct or indirect supervision of the registered healthcare practitioner. Carrying out this apprenticeship will continue to develop your knowledge and skills to provide excellent care in your chosen setting.
You will be expected to provide high quality compassionate healthcare, following standards and policies or protocols as laid out by your employer.
You will choose to specialise in one of the following 6 pathway areas:
- Adult Nursing Support
- Mental Health / Learning Disabilities Support
- Children and Young People
- Therapies (Suitable for those in the Allied Health Professions)
- Maternity
- Theatre Support
Your course will be tailored to your chosen pathway, to include the relevant knowledge, skills, and behaviours to develop in your chosen field of Health and Social Care.
Learners enrolled onto the L3 HCSW Apprenticeship will be employed in Health or Social Care by a regional industry employer. This will enable you to learn the practical skills and behaviours needed to be successful in industry, while learning the underpinning knowledge to support your practice.
What does the course involve?
You may work in a range of settings, including hospitals, working in partnership with individuals, families, carers and other service providers. You may supervise or guide less experienced staff within your team, following the code of conduct for healthcare support workers and adult social care workers.
You will study a range of criteria in order to complete the apprenticeship standard in your chosen pathway, which will be adult nursing support, mental health support, or allied healthcare support.
How will the course be assessed?
The end-point assessment will assess the skills, knowledge and behaviours required for this role via a multiple-choice test (MCQ), a practical observation and a portfolio Interview.
What future study opportunities and careers are there?
Upon completion, and after gaining experience, you may choose to work towards applying for an assistant practitioner or nursing associate post within the workplace. Alternatively, you may apply for degrees in Integrated Mental Health and Social Care or Health and Social Care Practice at University Centre Weston.

Entry Requirements
Learners enrolling onto the L3 SHCSW Apprenticeship should have at least 6 months of practical experience in a clinical setting relevant to their chosen pathway. It is strongly recommended that learners under the age of 18 apply instead for the Level 2 Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship before progressing to the Level 3 due to the nature of some tasks included in the Level 3.
There are no formal qualifications required. However, you will be assessed to ensure that you have the ability to achieve English and maths functional skills to a minimum of Level 2 prior to the completion of your apprenticeship. You will also need to be in relevant employment, but we can help you find this.
