Criminology, Certificate

This course can also be studied if you are an adult aged over 19 years old. It is ideal for any students interested in the social sciences or humanities. Criminology is a qualification which includes elements of psychology, law and sociology and is an exciting area of study.

The BTEC course will help you gain knowledge of the criminal justice system and will be of interest to anyone who wants to find out more about the study of crime and the processes of crime detection and criminal justice.

It is a multidisciplinary subject and involves theoretical study and practical elements. You will examine the criminal process from crime scene to courtroom and you will also examine theories that explain the behaviours and reasons why people commit crime.

The course will enable you to develop a range of transferrable skills including independent research skills, problem solving, presentation skills and the ability to work collaboratively. These skills will help you advance in your career and are valuable to employers in any industry.

Subjects/Topics Covered

  • Changing Awareness of Crime

This unit focuses on building your understanding of the different types of crime and the things that influence the way we perceive crime. You will examine the reasons why certain crimes are less likely to be reported to the police.

  • Criminological Theories

We look at definitions of crime and what constitutes criminal and deviant behaviours. You will examine why people commit crime, drawing on biological, psychological, and sociological theories. You will consider how these theories may influence social policy in relation to crime. Successful completion of this course supports access to the level 3 diploma in criminology in year 2, higher education degree courses in social sciences such as Criminology, Sociology, Psychology and Law.

Studying criminology will also provide a good grounding in the knowledge and understanding required to go on to employment in the criminal justice system in areas such as the probation service, policing and the courts and tribunals service.

Assessment Method

There will be three hours of teaching each week as well as weekly small group and one to one tutorials. In addition, you should be prepared to do at least three hours of reading and research outside of class each week. Delivery of the lessons will be online, with resources and extra

reading posted to the shared Teams (a free download) or online classroom.

50% of the assessment is through externally marked examinations and 50% through internally marked controlled assessment. The controlled assessments are 8 hours long will take place in January and April.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will be required to have 5 GCSE/O levels or equivalent including English We will consider applicants who have work related experience if they do not meet the basic entry requirements. All applicants will need to take an additional literacy test
