Motor Vehicle, IMI Diploma
This course is designed for people aged over 19 years and is perfect if you are looking to improve your skills and knowledge of car maintenance and increase your career opportunities.
The Level 2 IMI Diploma in Motor Vehicle Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair is a combination of theoretical study and practical work, and you will be taught using a combination of online lessons and on-campus sessions.
You will learn how to service and repair cars and vans and how to diagnose and solve non-complex faults on vehicles. You will also receive training on Hybrid Vehicle Technology.
You can put everything you learn into practice in our fantastic, state-of-the-art South West Skills Campus. You will study in our industry-standard Automotive Training Centre, which was originally a commercial garage and dealership and is the perfect place to practice our skills.
This course is supplemented by employer and industry engagement activities, guest speakers, industry related trips and visits to help broaden your perspective and understanding of the motor industry.

- Light vehicle maintenance
- Light vehicle engine units
- Light vehicle lubrication and cooling systems
- Light vehicle fuel, air and exhaust systems
- Light vehicle electrical units
- Light vehicle chassis units and components
- Light vehicle transmission and driveline units
- Customer service skills in the automotive industry
Assessment method
You will take part in online exams and practical competency assessments for each unit of study.
Fees
Your course may be FREE if you live in the South West of England and:
- You are defined as being unemployed.
- You are employed, or self-employed, and earn less than £17,374.50 annual gross salary or less than £18,525.00 (West of England Combined Authority postcodes).
- If you are 19-23 (all postcodes) or 50+ (West of England Combined Authority postcodes only) and do not hold a full Level 2 qualification.
If you do not meet the above criteria there are also co-funding options, please contact us to discuss your circumstances.
Progression opportunities
Successful completion of the course will enable you to seek an apprenticeship in the motor vehicle industry or to progress to a level 3 course (which maybe free as part of the National Skills Fund.

Entry Requirements
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 3-1 with at least two at grade 3 or the successful completion of a prevocational programme.
