Earlier this month, our Electrical Installation Apprentice, Gracie Donaghy, was named joint winner of the Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2026 Award alongside another apprentice Petra O’Flaherty. Competing against more than 3,000 apprentices from across the UK and Ireland, Gracie successfully progressed through several challenging stages before being crowned one of just two winners.

City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (Buildings and Structures)

The Electrical Technical Diploma Level 2 is an advanced vocational program designed to build upon the foundational knowledge acquired in Level 1 or cater to individuals with prior experience in electrical installations. The primary entry requirement for this diploma is a minimum grade of 4 in both English and mathematics. The course objectives include in-depth exploration of advanced electrical principles, encompassing electrical calculations, three-phase systems, power factor correction, and fault analysis, enabling learners to proficiently manage intricate electrical systems.

This week, one of our Electrical Apprentices, Marcus Pan, competed in the SPARKS Learner of the Year 2026 competition, working on an electrical build against other learners from across the UK. After winning the South West Regional competition in January, Marcus progressed to the final against 6 other regional winners and placed 2nd overall. A fantastic achievement and reflection of his hard work and dedication to his apprenticeship.

Electrical Apprentice, Marcus, Wins the SPARKS South West Regional Competition

Weston College hosted the South West Regional HIP & SPARKS Competition again for the second year in a row at our South West Skills Campus yesterday, welcoming students, apprentices and lecturers from colleges across the South West of England. Students who win their regional heat will then compete for a chance to become the Learner of the Year Winner in the national Grand Final.

Electrical Installation, Diploma

You will be stretched and challenged both academically and practically: working towards industry expectations and standards- introducing specialist skills and knowledge required for progression opportunities to further higher-level vocational courses and entry into employment.

You will cover a wide range of units such as:

  • Electrical Installations Technology
  • Principles Of Electrical Science
  • Installation of Wiring Systems and Enclosures
  • Health and Safety in building Services Engineering
  • Communication Skills for Building Services

Entry Requirements

You need to be able to work at GCSE grade 4 and above and have a desire to enter the construction industry.

Additional Information

You should be comfortable using Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Word, as these tools play a crucial role in our collaborative and tech-savvy approach to education. Furthermore, we encourage independent work, as you are expected to navigate tasks on days where you may not physically be at the college.

Requirements for Electrical Installations

This 3-day theory-based course will provide familiarisation with the content of the latest requirements for electrical installation (Amendment 4:2026) to and ensure compliance with BS7671:2018 IET Wiring Regulations (otherwise known as 18th Edition).

What will I study

During this course you will become familiar with key principles of BS7671 including understanding of:

  • Scope, objectives, and fundamental principles of BS7671

  • Definitions used within BS7671

  • Assessing the general characteristics of electrical installations
