Course Overview
The Electrician (Installation/Maintenance) Apprenticeship is the ideal route into one of the UK's most in-demand trades. Working alongside experienced electricians, you'll develop the skills needed to install, maintain, inspect, test, and repair electrical systems across domestic, commercial, and industrial environments while earning a salary.
You will spend most of your time employed by an electrical contractor, gaining valuable workplace experience, alongside attending Weston College one day a week to develop the technical knowledge that underpins your practical skills. This combination of real-world experience and specialist teaching ensures you graduate ready to work confidently within the industry.
Based at Weston College's South West Skills Campus, you'll learn in industry-standard electrical workshops equipped with professional installation bays, testing equipment, specialist tools, and the latest technologies used throughout the sector. You'll be taught by experienced electrical professionals who bring extensive industry expertise into every lesson.

What will I study?
During the apprenticeship, you'll work towards a Level 3 Electrotechnical qualification while developing the practical skills required of a professional electrician.
Topics include:
• Electrical installation principles • Wiring systems and installation methods • Termination and connection of electrical systems • Inspection, testing, and certification • Fault finding and diagnosis • Electrical maintenance and repair • Electrical science and principles • Planning and preparing installation work • Building regulations and wiring regulations • Health, safety, and environmental legislation • Organising and supervising work activities • Customer service and professional communication
You will also continue to develop your English and maths skills where required.
Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll apply your learning within your workplace, gaining extensive experience working on live electrical installations under the guidance of experienced professionals.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment takes place throughout the apprenticeship and concludes with an End-Point Assessment.
Assessment includes:

The final assessment requires you to complete a range of practical installation, inspection, testing, and fault-finding tasks that reflect the work of a fully qualified electrician.

Entry Requirements
You will typically need:
• GCSE English at Grade 5 or above • GCSE Maths at Grade 5 or above • At least three additional GCSEs at Grade 4 or above
Alternatively:
• Successful completion of a relevant pre-vocational programme
Your suitability for the apprenticeship will also be considered based on your interview, previous experience, and employer requirements.
You must also be employed in a relevant electrical role. If you are not currently employed, Weston College can provide advice and support to help you find a suitable apprenticeship opportunity.

Successful completion of this apprenticeship enables you to work as a qualified electrician and provides excellent opportunities for further career development.
