Weston College providing construction training for the region
The Construction Training Centre has been open for just over four months, and is already proving a popular destination for construction firms.
The centre was developed in response to the growing demand for a trained and skilled construction workforce, and is the first of its kind in the region.
It isn’t focussed on providing training for one industry, but is instead a ‘one-stop shop’ that offers training courses in:
- Plant
- Health and safety
- Scaffolding
- Highways and groundworks
- Driver training
- Warehousing
The courses are developed around employers and their needs, to ensure that the centre provides relevant and effective training.
The facility is impressive, and boasts all the equipment you would expect to find on a construction site.

The Construction Training Centre offers courses for novices and experienced operatives, alike, and utilises a wide variety of equipment. This includes the opportunity for construction workers to familiarise themselves with the latest industry equipment.
This centre also benefits from several partnerships, with national firms backing the training that is on offer for construction employees and businesses throughout the south west. The College has partnered with scaffolding experts Simian Risk to deliver a large portfolio of CISRS accredited training courses. Heavyweights in the plant industry, and Weston based company, Plantforce, has also partnered with Weston College to offer a tier one site ready package.
Not only is this an opportunity to bring companies’ construction training under one roof, the team at the Construction Training Centre will also help CITB-registered businesses access funding to complete training courses.
Head of the Construction Training Centre, Simon Werkshagen, said: “The Construction Training Centre really is meeting the need of the industry.
“Construction workers were having to go as far as Birmingham to complete their training – which includes compulsory qualifications. This centre has brought all of the training under one roof, and is conveniently located just minutes from junction 21 of the M5.
“Our courses are industry-recognised and nationally accredited, which is a real plus for a new facility. This has helped to ensure that we have a busy start to life at the Construction Training Centre, and we look forward to this continuing over the coming months.”
