Course Overview
The Hair Professional Apprenticeship is the perfect way to begin your career as a professional hairdresser. Combining paid employment with specialist college training, you'll work alongside experienced stylists in a real salon environment while developing the practical skills, technical knowledge, and professional confidence needed to succeed in this creative and fast-paced industry.
Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll gain experience in all aspects of hairdressing, from cutting and colouring to styling and client consultation. Alongside your workplace training, you'll attend Weston College to develop your practical techniques in our commercial salons, where you'll work with professional products, equipment, and industry-standard techniques under the guidance of experienced tutors.
As a member of Weston College's Hair & Beauty Career Excellence Hub, you'll benefit from strong partnerships with local salons, employer networking opportunities, guest demonstrations, industry masterclasses, salon visits, and career events. These experiences will help you build valuable professional connections while developing the skills employers are looking for.
This apprenticeship provides an excellent foundation for a successful career within the hairdressing industry, whether you aspire to work in a salon, specialise in colour, session styling, or eventually manage or own your own business.
What will I study?
Throughout the apprenticeship, you'll develop the practical skills and professional knowledge required to work successfully as a hairdresser.
Topics include:
• Client consultation • Shampooing and conditioning • Hair cutting techniques • Hair colouring • Styling and finishing • Hair dressing and occasion styling • Blow drying and finishing techniques • Hair and scalp care • Health and safety • Professional behaviours • Customer service • Retail and product knowledge
You will also continue to develop your English and maths skills where required as part of your apprenticeship.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment takes place throughout the apprenticeship and concludes with an End-Point Assessment.
Assessment includes:
• Workplace observations • Practical assessments in Weston College's commercial salons • Portfolio of evidence • Regular reviews with your assessor • Six-hour externally graded End-Point Assessment trade test
Your assessor will regularly visit your salon to review your progress and support your development throughout the programme.

Working in a professional salon throughout your apprenticeship will allow you to build confidence, develop your client base, and gain valuable commercial experience from day one.
Entry Requirements
• Four GCSEs at grades 9–3, including English and maths
OR
• A relevant Level 1 qualification
You must also:
• Be employed within the hairdressing industry
If you are not currently employed, Weston College can provide advice and support to help you find a suitable apprenticeship opportunity.
What can I do after this course?
Successful completion of this apprenticeship provides an excellent foundation for a long-term career in hairdressing.
