Course Overview
The Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship is an excellent route into one of the UK's most rewarding and in-demand sectors. Combining paid employment with structured college learning, you'll develop the knowledge, practical skills, and professional behaviours needed to provide high-quality care while supporting experienced healthcare professionals in real working environments.
You'll be employed by a health or social care organisation and gain valuable hands-on experience caring for patients and service users while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. Throughout the programme, you'll learn from experienced tutors and workplace mentors who will support you in developing the confidence and competence needed to succeed within the healthcare sector.
As part of your apprenticeship, you'll complete the nationally recognised Care Certificate during your induction, providing a strong foundation in the core skills and values required for professional care.
As a member of Weston College's Health & Social Care Career Excellence Hub, you'll benefit from strong partnerships with local NHS trusts and care providers, employer networking opportunities, guest speakers, industry visits, and career-focused activities designed to support your long-term career progression.
What will I study?
Throughout the apprenticeship, you'll develop the knowledge and practical skills required to provide safe, compassionate, person-centred care.
Topics include:
• Person-centred care • Safeguarding • Communication skills • Health, safety, and infection prevention • Equality, diversity, and inclusion • Supporting individuals with daily living activities • Monitoring health and wellbeing • Clinical support duties • Teamwork and professional behaviours • The Care Certificate standards • Working within healthcare legislation, policies, and professional codes of practice
You'll gain practical experience supporting individuals across a range of health and social care settings while working alongside experienced healthcare professionals.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment takes place throughout the apprenticeship before you complete an independent End-Point Assessment.
Assessment includes:
• Workplace observations • Portfolio of evidence • Professional discussions • Regular progress reviews • End-Point Assessment
Your employer, assessor, and tutor will support you throughout the programme to ensure you are fully prepared for your final assessment.

Entry Requirements
There are no formal qualification requirements to join this apprenticeship.
You will need to:
• Be employed in a relevant health or social care role • Be able to achieve Functional Skills Level 1 in English and maths, if required • Complete the Level 2 English and maths assessments before completing your apprenticeship where applicable
