Course Overview
This apprenticeship is ideal if you enjoy solving technical problems, working with machinery, and finding practical solutions. You'll combine paid employment with college-based learning, developing the knowledge and technical skills needed to maintain, monitor, and improve engineering systems across a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, energy, transport, and advanced engineering.
You'll learn from experienced engineering tutors while working alongside industry professionals in the workplace. During your apprenticeship, you'll gain hands-on experience maintaining equipment, diagnosing faults, carrying out repairs, and ensuring engineering systems operate safely and efficiently. Training takes place in Weston College's industry-standard engineering workshops alongside practical workplace learning, giving you the opportunity to apply your skills in real engineering environments.
As a Weston College apprentice, you'll become part of our Engineering Career Excellence Hub. Through employer networking events, industry visits, guest speakers, and engineering masterclasses, you'll gain valuable industry insight while building the professional skills employers value. Our strong partnerships with leading engineering employers help prepare you for long-term success in this exciting and fast-moving sector.
What will I study?
Throughout the apprenticeship, you'll develop practical engineering knowledge across a wide range of maintenance and operations disciplines, including:
• Mechanical engineering principles • Electrical and electronic systems • Maintenance techniques and fault diagnosis • Preventative and reactive maintenance • Turning and milling • CNC machining • CAD and CAM technologies • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) • Materials science • Fabrication and welding • Engineering health, safety, and quality assurance
You'll also develop the planning, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills needed to work effectively in modern engineering environments.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is carried out throughout your apprenticeship and includes:
• Workplace observations • Practical engineering assessments • Online knowledge tests • Assignments • Portfolio of evidence • End-point assessment demonstrating your knowledge, skills, and behaviours

Entry Requirements
• Three GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including maths, English, and science, or equivalent qualifications • Employment with a suitable engineering employer
