Course Overview
The Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship is ideal for people who are passionate about helping children learn and develop. Combining paid employment with college study, you'll gain the knowledge, practical experience, and professional skills needed to support teaching and learning in schools while working towards a nationally recognised qualification.
You'll be employed within a school or educational setting, working alongside experienced teachers to support pupils of all abilities, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Alongside one day a week at Weston College, you'll benefit from expert tuition, real workplace experience, and membership of our Education Career Excellence Hub, providing employer engagement, guest speakers, workshops, and career development opportunities.
What will I study?
You'll develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to become an effective Teaching Assistant, including:
• Schools as organisations • Child and young person development • Assessment for learning • Supporting teaching and learning • Safeguarding children and young people • Supporting positive behaviour • Partnership working with children, families, and professionals • Health and safety in education settings • Supporting learners with additional needs, including SEND • Professional communication and teamwork
You will also continue to develop your English and maths skills where required.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment includes:
• Workplace observations • Practical assessments and projects • Reviews of workplace performance • End-point assessment, including: • Professional discussion • Workplace observation • Knowledge test

Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll benefit from:

Apprentices must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week and will attend college for taught sessions, coaching, and end-point assessment preparation.
Entry Requirements
You'll need:
• A Level 2 Early Years or Teaching Assistant qualification • Level 1 English and maths (with the opportunity to achieve Level 2 Functional Skills during the apprenticeship if required) • Relevant employment within an educational setting
A DBS check will also be required as part of your employment. If you have not yet secured an employer, Weston College can support you in finding a suitable apprenticeship.
What can I do after this course?
Successful completion of this apprenticeship could lead to:
• Employment as a Teaching Assistant in primary, secondary, or SEND settings • Progression to higher-level apprenticeships in education • Further study, including: • BA (Hons) Education, Society and Childhood • BA (Hons) SEND and Inclusive Practice at University Centre Weston
