What Will I Study?

You'll gain the skills and knowledge needed to work as a site carpenter through a combination of practical workshops and classroom-based learning.

Topics covered include:

  • Health and safety in construction
  • Principles of construction
  • Structural carpentry
  • Non-structural carpentry before plastering
  • Non-structural carpentry after plastering
  • Timber technology
  • Safe use of a circular saw
  • Using a range of carpentry tools, equipment and techniques
  • Measuring, marking out and working accurately to plans and specifications

Throughout the course, you'll develop practical skills that reflect real-world carpentry tasks and industry standards. ##Assessment Method

You'll be assessed throughout the course using a variety of methods, including:

  • Practical skills tests
  • Workshop observations
  • Written assignments
  • Online assessments

These assessments will allow you to demonstrate both your practical abilities and your understanding of key carpentry principles.

Entry Requirements

To enrol on this course, you should have a general understanding of the construction industry, an interest in carpentry, and some basic practical skills.

You will also need:

  • A Level 2 qualification
  • Grade 4 (or above) in both English and Maths

Successful completion of this qualification can help you progress into employment within the construction industry as a site carpenter.

You may also choose to continue your training through further qualifications or an apprenticeship to develop your skills and career opportunities.

To work on some larger construction sites, you may need to obtain a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card. Your tutors can provide guidance on this during the course and discuss the best route for your career goals.
