Supported Internship: Into Work
Supporting young people with SEND to build confidence, independence, and move into sustained paid employment.
The Supported Internship Programme is designed for young people aged 16–24 with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The programme helps interns transition from education into meaningful, sustained paid employment.

This programme is ideal for young people who:
- Are aged 18 - 24 with an active EHCP
- Are motivated to gain paid employment
- Benefit from learning in a real work environment
- Can follow simple instructions and workplace routines
- Are building independence, confidence, and work-related skills
- Have support needs that fit within a supported internship model
- Are willing to travel independently or undertake travel training
What Will Learners Achieve?
By the end of the programme, learners will have:
- Built practical job skills and workplace behaviours
- Completed an internship
- Developed communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience for the workplace
- Completed travel training and gained independence at work
- Understood workplace professionalism
- Achieved English, maths, and digital skills where appropriate
Entry Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be 16–24 years old
- Have a current EHCP or SEND status
- Be ready to transition from education into employment
- Commit to a full-time programme combining work placement and classroom learning
- Be able to manage basic workplace expectations and personal care needs with minimal support
- Participate in assessment activities including vocational profiling and an initial interview.
Career and Progression Opportunities
Where possible, interns can progress into:
- Sustained paid employment (with the host employer or a new employer)
- Apprenticeships or supported apprenticeships
- Further education or targeted training.
- Supported employment services for those who require continued structured support.
