Hi, I am Nichola and will be organising your placements for the duration of your Health and Social Care course here at Weston College. I have been working closely with Health and Social Care employers in North Somerset and the surrounding areas for over 6 years to enable successful work placements for our learners. I have had over 25 years experience in this sector from Care in the Community to Management, Outreach Support for Vulnerable Adults, pioneering the Home from Hospital scheme at Weston General Hospital. All these roles involve working with a diverse range of people from the most sick and vulnerable to high level health professionals and families. I have also gained experience around SEND processes in North Somerset in the last couple of years during COVID.

Working in education inspires me as this is a personal journey for each individual, so to see learners flourish, develop their skills, gain knowledge and confidence for their chosen career path and to be part of that process for me is very rewarding. To have industry experience I can provide relevant knowledge and advice which will hopefully enhance learners progression onto their chosen pathway whether University, employment or another programme of study.

The College ethos of putting learners first shines though in every aspect of the college. The pastoral/welfare support is key here at the College and as a parent myself I know the learners health and mental health is priority. The Industry experience amongst the staff is invaluable and staff are extremely supportive. This reflects in the academic results each year - they are outstanding!

This industry has an amazing and diverse variety of career options, there are so many professions within health and social care. Future employment opportunities have been highlighted by the pandemic and we could not have managed without the health service during this challenging time. There will always be employment opportunities within this sector!

My advice to any students is to just ask if you are unsure of anything at all, attendance is key and having a great attitude! This is an amazing period of time for you, make the most of the opportunities on offer. Don't worry if you are unsure of not knowing what you want to do - lots of learners are in the same boat! Lastly.... enjoy it! It all goes too quickly!
