Course Overview

This flexible apprenticeship is delivered in partnership with Mindful Education and blends on-the-job training with support from Weston College, allowing you to gain practical experience while completing guided learning and workshops. You will work in a finance team, applying your learning to tasks such as ledger management, reconciliations, and financial reporting.

The Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship provides a solid foundation in finance administration and progresses to more complex accounting disciplines. You will learn double-entry bookkeeping, costing principles, financial processes, advanced bookkeeping, final accounts, VAT, management accounting techniques, and ethical practices for accountants.

Delivered in partnership with Mindful Education, the course uses a blended learning model combining flexible online study with regular sessions with a college tutor. Online lessons, accessible via mobile, tablet, or desktop, last around 45 minutes and feature animations, interactive case studies, and practical exercises. On-campus or virtual sessions provide tutor-led guidance, group exercises, and discussions to help apply theory to real workplace situations.

Your apprenticeship is based at Knightstone Campus, where you will automatically join Weston’s Career Excellence Hub, giving you access to employer networking, career-boosting activities, trips, and guest lectures.

You will also develop essential software skills, including spreadsheet training, as well as business communication and lifelong learning skills, ensuring the knowledge gained is directly transferable to the workplace.

What will I study?

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through:

  • Synoptic end-test covering all knowledge and skills
  • Practical workplace observation
  • Portfolio of evidence demonstrating knowledge, skills, and behaviours
  • Online exams and scenario-based projects
  • Reflective discussions reviewing your application of knowledge in the workplace

Entry requirements

  • Must be employed in a relevant accounting role

  • 5 GCSEs including maths and English at Grade 5/C or Functional Skills Level 2 in English and maths

  • Good keyboarding skills

  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting is advantageous, but not essential

Successful completion opens pathways to:

  • Level 4 Accounting Technician Apprenticeship or AAT Level 4 Diploma
  • Progression to accounting, payroll, or finance administrator roles
  • University study in accounting, finance, or business management
  • Careers such as accounts officer, finance analyst, assistant accountant, payroll officer, or management accountant
