Course Overview
The Accounts/Finance Assistant Apprenticeship is a 12–14-month programme that combines practical workplace experience with flexible online learning and regular support from Weston College tutors. Designed for those starting their career in finance, you'll develop the knowledge and confidence to support day-to-day accounting functions while working towards the internationally recognised AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting.
Delivered through a blended learning model, the course combines engaging online lessons with tutor-led sessions on campus or virtually, allowing you to fit your studies around work. You'll develop skills in bookkeeping, costing, accounting software, and business communication, applying your learning directly to real workplace responsibilities. As a Weston College apprentice, you'll also become part of our Career Excellence Hub, giving you access to employer networking, guest speakers, industry events, and career-enhancing opportunities.
What will I study?
You'll study a range of essential finance topics, including:
• Introduction to bookkeeping
• Principles of bookkeeping
• Principles of costing
• The business environment
• Accounting software essentials
• Business communication skills
• Professional behaviours and lifelong learning
Training is delivered through a flexible blend of online learning and tutor support.
Online learning includes:
• Lessons accessible on a phone, tablet, or computer
• Interactive animations, case studies, and practical exercises
• Flexible study designed to fit around your working day
Tutor support includes:
• Regular sessions on campus or online
• Group activities and problem-solving exercises
• Applying theory to real workplace scenarios
How will I be assessed?
Assessment includes:
• A synoptic end test covering the knowledge and skills developed throughout the programme
• A portfolio of workplace evidence demonstrating your practical experience
• A reflective discussion exploring your portfolio and professional development
Your employer and college tutor will support you throughout your apprenticeship and end-point assessment.
Entry Requirements
It is beneficial to have:
• Some prior knowledge of finance or bookkeeping
• A Level 1 Bookkeeping qualification
You must also be employed in a suitable finance or accounting role that enables you to develop and demonstrate the required skills.

• This apprenticeship is fully funded for eligible apprentices
• Employers can use their Apprenticeship Levy to cover training costs
• Small and medium-sized employers may be eligible for 95% government funding
• Membership of Weston College's Career Excellence Hub
