Course Overview
The Site Carpentry Apprenticeship is the ideal starting point for anyone looking to begin a career in the construction industry. Combining paid employment with technical training, you'll work alongside experienced tradespeople while attending College one day a week to develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed as a professional site carpenter.
At Weston College, you'll train in industry-standard facilities at our South West Skills Campus and become part of our Construction Career Excellence Hub. You'll benefit from employer networking, site visits, masterclasses, and strong partnerships with leading construction companies, helping you build valuable industry connections and prepare for a successful future in construction.
What will I study?
You'll develop practical skills and technical knowledge in areas including:
• First and second fix carpentry • Erecting structural carcasses • Roof, floor, and partition construction • Safe working practices and construction legislation • Safe use and maintenance of hand and power tools • Reading and interpreting technical drawings and CAD information • Estimating materials and resources • Measuring, marking out, fitting, cutting, and finishing timber • Site preparation and productive working practices • Professional communication, teamwork, and time management • English and maths skills (where required)
How will I be assessed?
Assessment includes:
• Practical skills tests • Written assignments • Portfolio of evidence • Online multiple-choice assessments • End-point assessment comprising:
- Knowledge assessment
- Practical skills assessment

Entry Requirements
You'll need:
• A minimum of five GCSEs at grades 9–2, including at least two at grade 4, or a relevant Level 1 qualification
You will also need to be employed within the industry, although Weston College can help you find a suitable employer.
What can I do after this course?
Successful completion of this apprenticeship could lead to:
• Employment as a qualified Site Carpenter • Progression to an Advanced Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship • Progression to Weston College's Level 3 Site Carpentry Diploma • Eligibility to apply for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS Card • A wide range of career opportunities within the construction industry
