Civil Engineering, Apprenticeship
This apprenticeship provides a paid job opportunity alongside a comprehensive skills development programme, allowing you to gain technical knowledge and practical experience through a combination of on-campus learning and workplace training. This unique combination of theoretical instruction and hands-on application prepares you for a successful future as a civil engineering professional.
One of the significant advantages of choosing a career in civil engineering is the potential for swift entry into the workforce. With an apprenticeship, you not only gain valuable experience but also the opportunity to learn, study, and earn money simultaneously.
Civil engineering plays a crucial role in designing, constructing, and maintaining infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, buildings, and water supply systems.
At Weston College, our apprenticeships are led by experienced professionals who possess in-depth knowledge of the field. They provide specialised training, expert guidance, and unparalleled access to local employers, giving you a competitive advantage in the job market. Our focus extends beyond practical skills, as we also develop your employability skills, ensuring that you are equipped with the abilities necessary to thrive in the civil engineering sector.
As part of our Career Excellence Hub, you will have unrivalled access to local employers through work experience, site visits, and masterclasses – allowing you to build relationships with renowned companies in the construction and civil engineering sectors. This support and development will pave the way for your future success.
Our South West Skills Campus provides state-of-the-art training facilities that replicate real-world civil engineering environments. These facilities include well-equipped workshops, surveying equipment, industry-standard software, and specialised laboratories for materials testing and geotechnical analysis. The civil engineering industry offers vast opportunities, and an apprenticeship can be your gateway to a rewarding and well-paid career. You can specialise in areas such as structural engineering, transportation engineering, or water resource management.
WHAT DOES THIS COURSE INVOLVE
You can expect to gain a broad skills base to work in areas that include sustainable construction, structural integrity, geotechnics, materials, tunnelling, marine and coastal engineering, water, waste management, flood management, transportation, and power.
Apprentices will learn to:
Apply appropriate civil engineering principles, techniques, and methods, including mathematical, scientific, and technical knowledge.
Apply key principles, techniques, and methods of data and technical information collection, analysis, and evaluation.
Operate appropriate software packages for data gathering and analysis, such as Computer-Aided Design (CAD) or Building Information Modelling (BIM), to create technical drawings, models, and designs.
Apply environmental policies and sustainable principles in civil engineering projects, recognising the need to reduce carbon use, lower emissions, and plan for wider sustainability.
Plan, carry out and manage own work in line with quality assurance, recognising the wider implications to customer needs, and within cost and resource limitations.
Consider equality, diversity, and inclusion in the delivery of civil engineering projects.
Apply document control processes and procedures using the approved processes, maintaining quality compliance when creating or amending engineering documentation.
Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, and incorporate relevant and appropriate terms, standards, and data.
Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information.
Plan, undertake and review their professional competence, regularly updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance.
The end-point assessment, is typically, undertaken in the last two months of the apprenticeship.
Many of our apprentices are kept on by their employer at the end of their programme. Many move on to degree-level study. You can progress to the HNC in Construction and the Built Environment (Civil Engineering) at University Centre Weston or can progress to a Level 4 apprenticeship that we also run.
You will need five GCSEs at grade 5 and above, including English and maths. You will also need to be in relevant employment, but we can help you find this.
