Course Overview
This apprenticeship combines paid employment with specialist engineering training, giving you the opportunity to develop practical machining skills while working alongside experienced engineers. You'll learn how precision components are manufactured, assembled, maintained, and refurbished using modern engineering techniques and industry-standard equipment.
Training is delivered through a blend of workplace learning and college-based study, allowing you to apply your knowledge in real engineering environments while developing the technical understanding employers expect from today's engineering technicians.
As a Weston College apprentice, you'll become part of our Engineering Career Excellence Hub, giving you access to employer networking events, industry visits, guest speakers, masterclasses, and career development opportunities. You'll also benefit from training in our industry-standard engineering workshops, equipped with modern machinery, specialist equipment, and CAD/CAM technology.
What will I study?
Throughout the apprenticeship, you'll develop the knowledge and practical skills required to become a skilled machining technician.
Topics include:
• Mechanical fitting • Electrical fitting • Electronic fitting • Instrumentation fitting • Pipe fitting • Control systems • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings • Precision assembly and refurbishment • Quality assurance and inspection • Safe working practices • Engineering principles and manufacturing processes
You'll also learn how to plan engineering tasks, select appropriate tools and equipment, assemble complex components, inspect finished work, and work effectively as part of an engineering team.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment includes a combination of workplace and end-point assessment activities, including:
• Independent end-point assessment • Practical assessments • Knowledge tests • Workplace observations • Portfolio of evidence demonstrating your competence

Entry Requirements
• GCSE Maths and English at Grade 5/C or above
If you have not yet achieved these qualifications, you will work towards the required Level 2 standard during your apprenticeship.
You will also need to be employed by a suitable engineering company. If you don't yet have an employer, Weston College can support you in finding an apprenticeship opportunity.
