Combining workplace experience with expert training, this apprenticeship prepares you to install, maintain, and repair domestic plumbing and heating systems while working towards a nationally recognised qualification.
Course Overview
The Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician Apprenticeship combines paid employment with industry-leading training, giving you the opportunity to develop both the practical skills and technical knowledge required by today's plumbing and heating sector.
You'll be employed by a plumbing or heating company while attending Weston College one day a week to study the theory behind your trade. Working alongside experienced professionals, you'll learn how to install, commission, maintain, and repair domestic plumbing and heating systems while gaining valuable real-world experience.
Based at our South West Skills Campus, you'll train in industry-standard workshops equipped with modern plumbing and heating systems, specialist tools, and dedicated training facilities. As part of our Construction Career Excellence Hub, you'll also benefit from employer networking opportunities, site visits, and masterclasses with leading companies across the sector.
What will I study?
You'll develop the knowledge and practical skills required to become a qualified Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician, including:
• Health and safety, including preparation for the CSCS Health and Safety Test through JIB-PMES
• Plumbing processes, techniques, hand and power tools
• Pipework installation and jointing methods
• Domestic plumbing and heating installations
• Cold water, hot water, central heating, rainwater, and sanitary systems
• Scientific principles including pressure, flow, heat, energy, power, and electricity
• Testing, commissioning, maintenance, and decommissioning of plumbing and heating systems
• Domestic fuel systems and environmental technologies
• Electrical supplies and control systems for plumbing and heating installations
You'll also specialise in one of four pathways:
• Gas
• Oil
• Solid Fuel
• Environmental Technologies
Depending on your chosen pathway, you'll work towards additional industry-recognised qualifications, including:
• Gas Safe Register (Gas pathway)
• OFTEC registration (Oil pathway)
• HETAS registration (Solid Fuel pathway)
• MCS Competent Person Scheme for Solar Thermal and Heat Pumps (Environmental Technologies pathway)
How will I be assessed?
Your end-point assessment takes place during the final three months of the apprenticeship and includes:
• Multiple-choice examination
• Design project
• Practical installation assessment
• Professional discussion
Entry Requirements
To join this apprenticeship, you will need:
• A completed Level 2 Plumbing and Heating apprenticeship or relevant Level 2 NVQ
• Relevant employment within the plumbing and heating industry (we can help you find an employer)
• To demonstrate you can meet the English and maths requirements for the apprenticeship
