Course Overview

The Engineering Technologies EAL Diploma is designed for learners who are ready to build on their existing engineering knowledge and develop the advanced technical skills employers are looking for. Whether you've completed a Level 2 engineering qualification or already have relevant experience, this course provides an excellent pathway into the engineering industry.

Based at Weston College's South West Skills Campus, you'll train in industry-standard workshops equipped with CNC machines, milling machines, centre lathes, fabrication and welding bays, and specialist engineering equipment. Guided by experienced engineering tutors with extensive industry backgrounds, you'll develop practical skills alongside the technical knowledge needed to work confidently in modern manufacturing and engineering environments.

A strong emphasis is placed on learning by doing. Through practical projects, workshop activities, and industry placements, you'll develop your machining, fabrication, manufacturing, and problem-solving skills while gaining valuable experience that reflects current engineering practice.

What will I study?

You will develop advanced practical engineering skills alongside the technical knowledge that underpins modern manufacturing.

Topics include:

• Advanced milling and turning • Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining • Fabrication and welding • Engineering design and technical drawing interpretation • Engineering materials and material science • Precision measurement techniques • Engineering mathematics • Quality assurance and inspection • Workshop health and safety • Manufacturing processes and engineering principles

Throughout the course, you'll complete practical engineering projects that allow you to apply your skills using industry-standard equipment and working practices.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment combines practical and theoretical methods to prepare you for industry.

Assessment includes:

• Practical workshop assessments • Tutor observations • Two online technical examinations (with on-demand resits where appropriate) • Engineering portfolio of evidence • Practical engineering projects

Your assessments are designed to demonstrate both your technical understanding and your ability to apply engineering skills in realistic workplace situations.

Entry Requirements

• Five GCSEs at grades 9–4, including English, maths, and science

• Successful interview

A relevant Level 2 engineering qualification or previous engineering experience is recommended.
