Functional skills

At Weston College we recognise that English and Maths is an integral part of an apprenticeship, and that your apprentice needs the time and support to develop these essential skills. Please see below further information outlining our offer and the requirements for apprentices across all faculties:

The Government expects all apprentices to be offered a Level 2 Functional Skill or GCSE in English and/or Mathematics if they have not already achieved Level 2 standard in these subjects (Grade C or Grade 4 at GCSE and Level 2 at Functional Skills). However, Level 1 English and Mathematics continues to be the minimum requirement to complete an Intermediate Apprenticeship.

Maths and English development will begin with a BKSB initial and diagnostic assessment to assess an apprentice’s starting point and the skills development required to achieve their English and maths qualification. Alongside this there is an initial writing assessment for English and a practice paper for maths. Depending on their apprenticeship pathway and prior attainment, an apprentice will be placed on either a Level 1, Level 2 or occasionally GCSE development pathway.

Four models of delivery: -

1. College Delivery

The apprentice is released from their work to attend the College for English and maths development in the classroom and can make excellent progress through this dedicated access to teachers and peers. Specialist tutors will work with the apprentice to focus on any gaps in knowledge and understanding to improve their skills and prepare them for their English and /or maths exam.

2. Specialist delivery

The apprentice accesses small group support in the College. This is for apprentices who require additional support and can come to the College.

3. Flexible delivery

These flexible short, intensive fast track courses can be delivered at the College or via remote access. They are typically delivered over 3 weeks with an exam at the end.

4. Work Based Group Delivery

Where a business has multiple apprentices, we can offer bespoke, on site English and maths delivery to suit the employer. Functional Skills development begins at the start of the apprenticeship, with the aim of apprentices achieving the qualification within the first 24 weeks of the programme. *If this is not achievable, this will then allow the apprentice additional time to study.

Halo workplace logo

Our workplace champions the right of staff to embrace all Afro-hairstyles. We acknowledge that Afro-textured hair is an important part of our Black employees’ racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance. We celebrate Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, braids, cornrows, fades, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps. In this workplace, we recognise and celebrate our colleagues’ identities. We are a community built on an ethos of equality and respect where hair texture and style have no bearing on an employee's ability to succeed.
