Georgie Thomson talking about her experiences with T Level Construction students

<p style="margin-bottom:8px;margin-left:0;margin-top:0px;"><span style="font-size:inherit;">As part of <strong>National Careers Week</strong> and <strong>Women in Construction Week</strong>, our Year 1 T Level learners in Design, Surveying, and Planning for Construction welcomed Georgia Thomson, Business Development Manager at <strong>Lancer Scott Facilities Management</strong> for a special guest lecturer.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-bottom:8px;margin-left:0;margin-top:0px;"><span style="font-size:inherit;">Georgia delivered an engaging and insightful presentation about her career journey in the construction industry. She shared the challenges she has faced and overcome as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, inspiring learners with her perseverance and achievements.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-bottom:8px;margin-left:0;margin-top:0px;"><span style="font-size:inherit;">Beyond her role at Lancer Scott, Georgia is an active committee member of the <strong>Women in Property organisation</strong>. She emphasised the importance of building a strong support network, encouraging learners to seek mentors, connect with peers, and engage with professional groups to enhance their careers.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-bottom:8px;margin-left:0;margin-top:0px;"><span style="font-size:inherit;">During the session, Georgia prompted discussion by asking learners what challenges women face in construction today and how more women could be encouraged to join the industry. <p>Our HGV Bootcamp has had a profoundly inspiring impact on Andy, who has successfully transitioned into his dream career, showcasing the effectiveness of our training program.</p><p>Andy secured a position with Towens, a company he had strategically targeted during the career planning segment of our employability course.</p><p>Andy has shared his enthusiasm for his new career, crediting the HGV Bootcamp for his success:</p><p>“I excelled throughout the entire bootcamp and can't thank Weston College enough for the hard work you put in for all the students. The HGV Bootcamp provided a calm and clear learning environment. The day after I passed my test, I went straight to Towens. PARKING

South-West Skills Campus has a free student car park on site. It's located through the main gates of the campus to the right-hand side. The car park can be accessed by students using their College ID badge.

TRAVEL

If you're arriving by train, Weston Milton station is only a 10 minute walk away. The closest bus stop is a short 3 minute walk away. The available bus services via this stop are 3, X1/X2, X5.

Cycle racks are also available on site for you to safely secure your bike.

<p data-pm-slice="1 1 []">On Thursday 21st March, Weston College and Acorn by Synergie hosted ‘Diversifying the Bristol Workforce – Prison Engagement Special’ at Ashton Gate Stadium.</p><p>The event which shed light on the potential of hiring Prison Leavers within the construction sector, was abuzz with enthusiasm from industry leaders, looking to unlock a new talent pool.</p><p>With approximately 50 attendees, including representatives from various construction companies, the event provided a platform for meaningful discussions and insightful exchanges.</p><p>As part of the discussions, was an informative, inspiring, and insightful panel of prominent figures, including:</p><ul><li class="ProsemirrorEditor-listItem" style="margin-left:32px;" data-list-indent="1" data-list-type="bulleted">Paul Kerslake, Managing Director of RTS Group and Chair of the Employment Advisory Board at HMP Leyhill</li><li class="ProsemirrorEditor-listItem" style="margin-left:32px;" data-list-indent="1" data-list-type="bulleted">Neil Lavis, Regional Broker for New Futures Network Avon, South Dorset, and Wiltshire</li><li class="ProsemirrorEditor-listItem" style="margin-left:32px;" data-list-indent="1" data-list-type="bulleted">Megan Porter, Recruitment Diversity Manager for Kier Group</li><li class="ProsemirrorEditor-listItem" style="margin-left:32px;" data-list-indent="1" data-list-type="bulleted">George, a Bristol-based site manager with lived experience shared his personal journey of rehabilitation and successful integration into the construction sector after being offered an opportunity during his time in prison.</li><li class="ProsemirrorEditor-listItem" style="margin-left:32px;" data-list-indent="1" data-list-type="bulleted">Alastair Phelpstead, Assistant Principal for Weston College Prison Education Group.</li></ul><p>Following the panel discussion, attendees had the opportunity to engage with the panellists, asking questions and seeking further advice.</p><p>Louise Greene, Employer Partnership Manager at Weston College and Lawrence Beach, Client Development Director at Acorn by Synergie co-organised the event, Lawrence commented: “<em>It was inspiring to see that many people linked with the construction industry sharing experiences, keen to learn more, with a will to help prison leavers.</em>”&nbsp; Louise commented: “<em>This event marked a significant step towards fostering inclusive employment practices within the construction industry, emphasizing the transformative impact of providing opportunities for Prison Leavers.</em></p><p><em>“Working together with companies across the region, we can create brighter futures for all.”</em></p><p><a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.w… more information about the work Weston College do to support employers, please click here</a>.<o:p></o:p></p>
