DONUTS by Extended Play - Dance show comes to Weston College
11 October 2023 19:00 – 20:00
DONUTS comes to Weston-super-Mare as part of a new associate venue programme recently announced by the Rural Touring Dance Initiative (RTDI).
Weston College is one of 9 venues across the country to pilot the programme connecting them to a network of dance programmers & artists, enabling bold and diverse dance work to be presented and new audiences for dance developed across the UK. The initiative is supported by Super Culture.
Three friends are getting ready for a night out. The music is intoxicating, they start to dance. It’s so good, they might stay a little longer...
Inspired by classic sitcoms of the 90s & 00s, DONUTS follows a group of friends as
their friendship evolves over time. DONUTS is a celebration of how music brings people together, no matter what life throws at them. Bursting with precision and soul, it is a hypnotic and playful ‘groove along’ to jazz and funk.
Drawing on his own relationship with music and its influence on his friendships growing up, international award winning choreographer, Jamaal Burkmar places music at the heart of his creative process.
DONUTS is the first, highly anticipated, full length dance piece from Extended Play - the company behind JUKEBOX, the breakthrough Instagram series combining popular music with their distinctive and dynamic style of dance.
DONUTS features music from Jameszoo, the composer, DJ and producer recently featured in The Guardian for ‘Best Music Tracks’ longlist (2019).
The tracks, inspired by jazz and funk also draw on 90s electronica and classical motifs, to provide an up-beat and energetic soundtrack to the piece.
Jamaal Burkmar
Jamaal is a graduate of and Artistic Associate at Northern School of Contemporary Dance, he recently choreographed for the London Contemporary Dance School graduate piece Pure Comedy, and is Work Place artist at The Place. He received the New Adventure Choreography award, and recently took part in a V&A Late with singer-songwriter Mahalia.

The Rural Touring Dance Initiative (RTDI):
Since its launch in 2015, The Rural Touring Dance Initiative (RTDI) has transformed UK rural dance touring, successfully increasing the quality and quantity of dance touring across the country, to make dance a vital and celebrated part of rural cultural life.
Entering its next phase, the RTDI is launching a new Associate Venue programme, partnering with 9 venues, predominantly in market towns across the UK, to support their dance programming over the next 3 years. The RTDI partners will collaborate with venues to present bold and diverse dance work and to develop new audiences for dance across the UK.
