“We are committed to ensuring that across the whole College community, everyone has a responsibility for actively supporting mental health and wellbeing, whether their own or that of others. By taking a whole institution approach to mental health and wellbeing, we will work collectively to promote an informed and inclusive culture. A culture that enables our students and staff to flourish and ensures an appreciation of mental health and wellbeing is central to all we do.”

Dr Paul Phillips CBE, Principal & Chief Executive, Weston College

Core aims:

  • Develop a community that shares responsibility for mental health, identifying difficulties early, to accelerate targeted, effective and timely interventions
  • Ensure that wellbeing naturally permeates all aspects of college life to ensure our community can fully embrace and enjoy their learning and work
  • Create an environment that empowers students with the internal resources to become adaptable, resilient, independent and work-ready
  • Foster a workforce culture that results in personal and organisational, wellbeing, benefits and success.

The Wellbeing@Weston strategy is a whole college approach that delivers an inclusive and caring environment for staff and students by placing wellbeing at the heart of all we do. The strategy focuses on future actions and improvements to our current service to be implemented between 2021-2024 centred on the four cornerstones of; Leadership, Prevention, Intervention and Partnerships.

It encompasses all the various high-quality support services that help you develop positive wellbeing and navigate the challenges we all face on a daily basis. This innovative, specialist and fluid support model encompasses three levels of support to ensure that needs of all within the College community can be supported to develop positive wellbeing.

In addition to these services, staff and students benefit from:

  • Students have Wellbeing@Weston packages built into their programme of study that will focus on where they are in their learner journey

  • Comprehensive online wellbeing site that is full of resources, guides and support to help individuals manage their wellbeing

  • Campus wellbeing activity timetables in addition to a digital health and fitness programme

  • Opportunity to achieve a digital wellbeing badge that will give the college community the opportunity to achieve an accredited award championed by Public Health England

  • College staff are also given the opportunity to access an inclusive CPD programme on mental health and wellbeing

  • Plus much more ...

The Body and Mind Innovation Framework

The focus on mental health and wellbeing has long been embedded in the College’s culture for a number of years, though we now simply view this as our number one priority. We strive to be a catalyst in how education establishments should be viewed as vital in supporting their community and that investment in mental health and wellbeing is integral to creating brighter futures. This framework brings together three strands:

1 - People

Optimising the College community’s health and happiness by placing connectivity, accessibility and wellbeing at the heart of all we do WELLBEING@WESTON.

2 - Partners

Maintaining and creating regional, national and international partnerships that have longevity for the future and reflect our holistic and multi-faceted community vision.

3 - Pioneers

Engagement in modern and innovative research and development opportunities to ensure we lead the field with an evidence - based approach.

Halo workplace logo

Our workplace champions the right of staff to embrace all Afro-hairstyles. We acknowledge that Afro-textured hair is an important part of our Black employees’ racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance. We celebrate Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, braids, cornrows, fades, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps. In this workplace, we recognise and celebrate our colleagues’ identities. We are a community built on an ethos of equality and respect where hair texture and style have no bearing on an employee's ability to succeed.
