What is it like working here?

Jenna Ratcliffe - Salon owner to Curriculum Co-ordinator
I wanted a career where I could make people feel positive about themselves and help them find mindfulness. In Year 10, I utilised work experience opportunities to help me decide, working in a hair salon the first week just didn't fit my personality and for the second week I worked in a beauty salon, and it was here that I felt inspired and really enjoyed the calmness of the salon. Work experience encouraged me to apply for a beauty therapy course. This course suited me perfectly and I was given the opportunity to explore spa life, as part of the course we visited the famous Sanctuary Spa in Covent Garden where I gained so much valuable experience.
When I completed the course, I never looked back and for anyone who is interested in following my footsteps I tell them “Don't allow anyone to tell you that you're not good enough – prove them wrong and achieve excellence!”
When I qualified, I found my feet quickly and set up my own business when I was just 19. After spending time in education, a passion was ignited. I have since spent over 16 years within the industry and now bring my wealth of experience as a Curriculum Co-ordinator and Lecturer in beauty and sports therapy teaching across Level 2 and 3 programmes at Weston College! I feel honoured to be a part of young people's journeys from education into industry.
As a Curriculum Co-ordinator I am passionate about leading my teams to success and develop learners experience by embedding competitions into the curriculum and providing them with opportunities outside of the classroom. Since taking this role, our learners have won medals at competitions with half of these being 1st place and one learner being selected for the WorldSkills UK Development Squad!
I also work as an internal quality assurer and staff mentor, meaning I work with staff to develop their resilience skills. Through my quality assurance I'm able to monitor the skills of learners entering industry and ensuring they can progress into meaningful employment once they have completed their studies.

Rebecca Summers – Salon owner to Lecturer
My career in beauty therapy has spanned over the last 18 years. I started as a beauty therapist and my reputation as a knowledgeable therapist are well respected, something I am immensely proud of. I keep up-to-date with current beauty trends and adapt to the evolving changes that has enabled me to become a successful therapist in Bristol and overseas.
In August 2018 I took the leap and opened my own business in central Bristol, this gave me the opportunity to learn more about the business side of the industry and helped me gain an understanding of how to develop a business – financially and professionally.
When Covid-19 hit in March 2020, I was forced to take a break from the business. For the first time in my career I had the space to reassess my career goals, and it was during this time that I made the decision to push forward with my Level 5 Diploma in Education and Teaching. I had always been interested in becoming a beauty lecturer, but my career progression had always seemed solely focused on management and training within salon.
In March 2021, I secured a temporary role at Weston College, teaching the fast track beauty therapy course and it was from my first lesson, that I knew that not only was this the path I wanted to persevere, but that Weston College was where I hoped I could develop my progression as a new lecturer!
My colleagues in the hair and beauty team are by far one of the most supportive teams I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I can bring my experience and knowledge into the classroom, allowing me the opportunity to build a strong network of new therapists. Every day a new challenge presents itself, and I have the security of knowing that I have a highly supportive manager. I am now in the process of completing my assessor's qualification - something the College has given me the opportunity to do!
Lauren West - Apprenticeships
I have worked within the hairdressing sector since starting an apprenticeship when I was 16. During that time, I completed my Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications in Hairdressing. During my career as a hairdresser, I changed my direction from working in a busy salon to becoming fully self-employed but after many years of working solo I decided to join a local team and made the big decision to solely focus on providing hair services within the Wedding sector.
Since working with them I worked my way up to managing a team of hairstylists, makeup artists and other beauty professionals and formed strong working relationships with a vary of service providers and companies. This has allowed me to gain a vast amount of knowledge within the industry that I love, and I am always striving to learn more with every experience both personally and professionally.
Training others has always been a passion that I wanted to pursue because of the training, support and guidance I received during my apprenticeship. I started at Weston College in 2020 and ever since then inspiring others to begin their journey within Hair and Beauty and sharing my knowledge and skills has just made my passion grow exponentially!
Through the college I have completed further education that has enabled me to achieve my current role as Vocational Training Assessor in Hairdressing and Barbering for Apprenticeships. It's such a huge privilege to be a part of an individual's first encounter to the industry and I hope to inspire many more to follow their passions and dreams just like I have done. I aim to inspire individuals to be the best they can be, to reach their goals and dreams and always guide them to aim higher!
