Lecturer in Applied Science
To put it simply, I teach science because I genuinely love science. The different schools of science, the methodology and even the philosophy of science. Most of all I love that science can be done by anyone of any age and qualifications. All it requires is curiosity and noticing something in the world and asking yourself this question, "Huh, I wonder why that happens?". I bring that enthusiasm to teaching my subject, I prefer to have classrooms filled with meaningful discussion than just copying off the board.
I have a BSc in Zoology from University of Bristol, while there I worked on 2 project in the laboratory. One was looking at the behaviours of woodlice and their responses to stimuli, the other was looking at how white blood cells communicate with each other. I also did a field experiment looking at soay sheep communication on Lundy Island.
There are as many different varieties of science and scientists as there are stars in the night sky. The profession depends on your own interests, you can have a very traditional laboratory research. Alternatively, you can be a statistician and run computer simulations from an office, or the other end of the scale, do field research in the Amazon on the biodiversity for weeks or months at a time.
My advice for any students would be to get stuck in! It is a big change from secondary school, where you are more hand held through education. Here, the more initiative you use, the more you will get out of the college experience. We are happy to guide you in the right direction but you have to "walk the walk". The more you put in, the more you will get out! Weston College has staff with wide and rich experiences in their various industries. Moreover, all of the staff are incredibly friendly and more than happy to help you out in whatever way possible.
