<p data-pm-slice="1 1 []">Level 1 courses are a great way to build a foundation of knowledge around a subject, introducing you at a more flexible and slower pace whilst building your skills and preparing you to progress onto Level 2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>There are many benefits to a Level 1 course. They create a foundation of knowledge for learners, building a solid base of information and skills which make them ideal for beginners. Not only this, they also build confidence in unfamiliar areas and act as a stepping stone to more advanced qualifications. They are also more accessible and flexible to a wider range of students.&nbsp;</p><p>Our Level 1 courses vary in entry requirements, with most courses requiring 5 GCSEs grade 3-1 with at least two grade 3 results. On some courses, it is also required to gain at least a grade 2 in GCSE Maths and English. <p data-pm-slice="0 0 []">Last term, one of our Level 1 <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/i-wan…; students, Jayden, participated in the <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.guildofbricklayers.org.uk/"><u>Junior Guild of Bricklayers Western Regional competition</u></a>. This was a fantastic opportunity for Jayden to put his skills into practice and gain valuable learning techniques from peers and industry professionals.&nbsp;</p><p>The <strong>Guild of Bricklayers</strong> aims to promote and uphold the highest standards of craftsmanship in brickwork. The Guild annually organises Junior and Senior regional heats through the UK’s construction college network, with the support of industry partnerships. These competitions bring together bricklaying professionals from all over the UK to further develop their skills and confidence.&nbsp;</p><p>During the competition, Jayden was the only first-year Level 1 student competing against Level 2 and Level 3 learners and apprentices. Despite this challenge, he remained undeterred, demonstrating remarkable determination and resilience throughout. He worked tirelessly to produce an accurate model that showcased both his talent and dedication.&nbsp;</p><p>Although he did not place, Jayden gained invaluable experience following the instructions provided to create the complex brickwork. <p>Max and Kieran, two <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/i-wan… Construction</a> students from Weston College, recently demonstrated their skill and professionalism at the <strong>South West Skills (SWS) Challenge Construction</strong> event held at <strong>Yeovil College</strong>. Competing against learners from other local colleges, the pair were set the demanding task of building a stretcher bond wall featuring a 90-degree herringbone pattern with recessed joints—an intricate challenge that tested precision, speed, and skills.</p><p>Although only first and second place were awarded prizes, Max and Kieran narrowly missed out, with judges remarking on how close the competition was. Remarkably, they completed the task in just four hours which was an hour ahead of the allotted five-hour limit. Events like these are crucial in helping students apply their classroom learning to real-world application. They provide a platform for learners to develop key transferable skills such as problem-solving, organisation, and communication in a high-pressure, hands-on environment.</p><p>Max and Kieran’s performance was applauded not only for the quality of their work but also for their professionalism and attitude. Hopefully next year, when we host the competition, we will get some points for the home team!"</p><p>Beyond the technical experience, the competition offered the students valuable opportunities to network with industry professionals serving as judges, who provided constructive feedback to assist in their continued development. It also gave them the chance to connect with peers who share similar interests and aspirations in construction.</p><p>After college, both Max and Kieran are set to begin apprenticeships in September with <strong>Dan Findlay Construction Ltd</strong>., working on <strong>Persimmon sites</strong>. Their experience at the SWS Challenge has made them more prepared for the next step in their careers.
