Get Involved
We take the views of our students very seriously and want to make sure we listen and respond to your opinions.
There are plenty of ways to get involved. Each course elects Student Representatives from each year to express the views of their group. These students attend staff student liaison committees to review academic issues and the student forum that focuses on the student experience and the cross-college issues.
There will also be other opportunities for all students to express their opinions.
Student Engagement Officer
Your Student Engagement Officer is your representative on key committees at all levels within the College and is there to ensure that your opinions are presented, listened to and actioned where appropriate. Essentially, the role exists to help you have an outstanding student experience during your time with us. If there are any issues you would like to raise through the student voice, your Student Engagement Officer will be happy to take these on board. You don't need to make an appointment; just pop into the office!
Student Forum
Student forums are held once every semester. The role of the Student Forum is to provide a discussion of the HE student experience at Weston College, examine any issues and concerns and share good practice. The forum also provides discussion of resources and facilities and make suggestions as appropriate.
Student Staff Liaison Committees (SSLC)
Staff Student Liaison Committees (SSLC) fit within the wider Higher Education Student Voice Strategy. They primarily focus on academic, programme-related matters and demonstrate the College’s commitment to receiving and acting upon the views of students studying on Higher Education programmes in order to continue to enhance and improve the provision itself and the student experience.
Freshers' Angels
Freshers’ Angels are current degree students who help the new intake of students settle into Higher Education life at Weston College. Their role involves contributing to the design and implementation of the Freshers’ Week activities, attending all the Freshers’ Week events and activities and looking out for the best interests of new students at these events. Freshers' Angels ensure that all new students are settling into their new environment (including the student accommodation) and help them get to know their new surroundings both on and off campus.
Peer Mentors
Peer Mentors are current degree students. The role of the Peer Mentor is to build relationships with his/her mentees, to act as a positive role model, and to support mentees to achieve their goals and make positive changes where needed. The mentor is a point of contact who can give advice and guidance, or even be someone just to have a chat about worries with.
Student Event Representatives
HE Student Event Representatives help with the organisation of social events throughout the academic year for HE students. In the past students have helped organise quiz nights, meals out and the HE End of Year Party. They also sit on the HE Student Union. This role is ideal for students who are looking to be a Freshers’ Angel in their second or third year of study.
Student Engagement and Achievement Award
The Higher Education Student Engagement and Achievement award is a scheme to reward our students for their participation in extra-curricular actives within Higher Education at Weston College.
All HE students are eligible to sign up for the scheme. The roles that count towards the award include: Freshers’ Angel, Student Ambassador, Student Event Representative, Peer Mentor and Student Representative.
The award is broken down into three tiers, based on the number that students participate in. The three levels are:
Bronze: 25 hours of volunteering
Silver: 50 hours of volunteering
Gold: 75 hours of volunteering
Participants will record their hours in a record book and provide evidence where possible of their volunteered hours.
At completion of each level of award the student will receive a certificate stating the type of role they participated in and the level.

Peer Press
Peer Press is our exclusive degree student newsletter - designed and produced by students.
It’s one of the ways we all keep in touch with each other, make sure you are up-to-date with everything that’s going on, and communicate important information related to student loans and social events, for example.
We hope, as students, you will want to write articles to be included. So, if you fancy yourself as a budding journalist, editor or designer, why not get involved in the design, content or production?
