GCSE Students 2021 - Smash National Benchmark
Weston College has an outstanding set of English and Maths GCSE results again this year. 40% of learners who re-took their Maths GCSE achieved a grade 4 or higher. 63% of learners who re-took English Language GCSE achieved a grade 4 or higher. Both of which are above the National Average which in 2019-20 was 35.7% for English and 28.1% for maths.
Each year we have a combination of new learners to the College and returning learners, who have previously failed to obtain the C grade required to progress to further education.
These results are a huge cause for celebration, and go to show how Weston College supports its learners to achieve.
Kelly O’Connor, Subject Area Manager for GCSE English, said: “I’m immensely proud of my students and am confident that they have paved their way to successful futures.”
Some of the tremendous successes recorded at the College include:
Andy
"I came back to prove to myself I can do this so that I can get into teaching. It was a great experience, the staff were really supportive”. He went on to say to anyone considering doing the same “Age is not a barrier, go for it!
Sammy
"I did not do well at school, I needed the grades to go to uni to be a paramedic. It’s been amazing, there has been lots of support. You are never too old to learn."
Lyndsey
"I was worried I was going to be the oldest - I wasn’t. I was worried I wouldn’t fit in - but I did! I am a mum with two children, so running a home, teaching my own children and studying during lockdown was a juggle but I have achieved it! I am really happy and have now applied for more courses at college to go into teaching or student support"
The Principal Dr Paul Phillips CBE commented; “At the beginning of the year we had a significant number of school leavers who had not achieved prior to joining us, plus adult learners [taught separately] also keen to succeed and use these skills to enhance their career aspirations”.
He went on further to praise both his staff and the commitment of learners.
“The dynamism of everyone involved has resulted in the pass rates above the national average, setting an exemplary standard for the future.”
