Constructing Lives Together – Karen’s Story

Last year, Weston College worked in partnership with construction company Willmott Dixon, to launch Constructing Lives Together, which aimed to support local adults to enter the construction industry.

One-year on, we have seen how beneficial this has been for the community, with local people having the opportunity to gain the certification and skills needed to enter the construction industry – including Karen, who is now a full-time Assistant Logistics Manager.

On Monday, 9th January, participants of the Plant Training Skills Bootcamp were joined at the Construction Training Centre by Kier Infrastructure and Utilities, Milestones Trust (Part of the M-Group) and Hays Recruitment who are actively recruiting Plant Machine Operators in utilities, construction and infrastructure sectors.  Skills Bootcamps are DFE funded short training programmes, no longer than 12 weeks in duration purely for adults 19+.  Skills Bootcamps have been designed with employers with a view to close skill

Weston College’s Construction Career Excellence Hub launched BACE Talks this week, which went down very successfully with learners.

The idea, which took inspiration from the very popular online series, TED Talks, allows learners to hear from industry professionals, who share their story and give top tips for the industry.

The first event was headlined by Pete Greene, the Deputy Branch Manager at Bradfords Building Supplies. He shared his personal story, which really connected with the learners, and inspired them.

REMS Visit Plumbing Apprentices

This week plumbing learners from our Construction Career Excellence Hub, were treated to a visit from German specialist tool manufacturers, REMS.

Daniel Parker, Regional Product Engineer at REMS, delivered a brilliant guest talk, whilst also showcasing the wide product range on offer. Daniel said: “It was a real pleasure to show off our product range to the next generation of Plumbing and Heating Engineers, the lads were really enthusiastic and a real credit to the College.”

Before the Construction Training Centre opened, learners from the South West had long distances to travel in order to gain scaffolding accreditation, but now that is not the case.
