Recently, a group of our year 1 <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/surve…; rel="noreferrer noopener" title="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/surve…; target="_blank">Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction T Level</a> learners took to Birmingham to visit the UK Construction Week event at the National Exhibition Centre. This event is the UK’s largest built environment trade show, where construction professionals can explore the latest innovations, gain insights from across the industry and network with their peers, with over three leading brands being displayed. Learners were shown a variety of different products and materials, including electric diggers, fireproof materials, turnstiles, health and safety equipment and much more. This allowed the students to get a feel for everything, discover the international exhibitors’ products, and meet lots of new people. <drupal-entity alt=""Learners talking to industry professionals at stalls"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="40545782-5523-4c61-a022-1f1373e37d78" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"max_500x500","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity> On top of this, there were also several gifts and freebies available from many of the stalls, including items like pens, pads, bags, tool kits, t-shirts, hats and caps, as well as a selection of sweets and chocolates which kept the excitement going throughout the day! All the learners actively engaged with everyone, talking to stall holders and asking questions regarding their products. The stall holders explained their exhibitions in detail to the students and were very impressed with our learners and the intuitive questions and incites they had.  <drupal-entity alt=""Learner trying out a product from one of the stalls"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="d9f7e422-4fd6-47af-a55e-613852b5c3ba" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"max_500x500","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity> Daniel Comerford, a Construction lecturer at Weston College, said, “All of the learners on the trip had a great time at the show and enjoyed talking to all the different companies that were exhibiting.  This improved their communication skills but also taught them about new and emerging products and technologies within the UK Construction Industry.” This day acted as a good introduction for their Construction T Level as it gave them a better understanding of not only the different available pathways they could enter, but also the existing companies and opportunities that they could experience both during their time at college and after. It also allowed the students to get to know each other better and work with peers that they may not have previously had the chance to get to know. Overall, the learners learnt a lot about new products and emerging technologies. Construction Learners Visit UK Construction Week

Construction T Level learners built a seat from pallets at Uncle Paul's Chilli Farm

The Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction T Level learners have had another exciting day out, visiting Uncle Paul’s Chilli Farm in Butcombe as part of their induction. Weston College have been proud partners of Uncle Paul’s Chilli Farm for many years and have supported many of our students during this time. It is an amazing charity that supports and empowers socially disadvantaged people with learning difficulties, creating an immersive and safe environment where they can learn, build their confidence, and prepare for employment. By taking our Construction T Level learners here, it gives them a better understanding of some of our partner charities and how important it is to give back to society. During this trip, they took part in team-building activities and learnt new skills to help introduce them to the course. Before the main activity commenced, the students took a tour of the farm to familiarise themselves with the environment, exploring the crops and admiring the animals as they went. They were then tasked with a team building, survival activity that required them to light a fire from scratch and boil a ‘Kelly kettle’ full of water to make everyone a hot chocolate or coffee. <drupal-entity alt=""Learners pouring the water they boiled to make drinks for the class"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="cf7c7bd1-60bf-4a1d-8d8a-8bddb09d28d1" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"max_500x500","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity> Once everyone was refreshed and hydrated, the students began working on their main task: repurposing donated pallets into furniture! Uncle Paul’s Chilli Farm had received some wooden pallets as a donation but had no real use for them, so asked our year 1 Construction T Level students if they could design and create pieces of furniture in groups that could be used around the farm, reducing waste and improving sustainability. <drupal-entity alt=""Students building a seat out of wooden pallets at the Chilli Farm"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="f04e0003-630e-412a-bff3-25e2073ae53a" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"max_500x500","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity> Both groups decided to repurpose the pallets into seats so they could be used around the farm by both learners and visitors. Once they had been made, the seats were painted green, ready to be used around the farm. But the fun didn’t stop there! Some learners also took part in the ‘Chilli Challenge’ where they got the chance to try a variety of Uncle Paul’s homegrown chillies, some of which proved to be very hot! <drupal-entity alt=""Learner Charles after eating a home-grown chilli"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="b1de16c8-cda4-4c37-bfb2-fbf803311ec1" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"max_500x500","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity> Daniel Comerford, one of our Construction lecturers at Weston College, said “everyone enjoyed the day very much. Our T level Design, Surveying and Planning in Construction students provided their assistance to the Foodbank Warehouse in Beaufighter Road, Weston-Super-Mare. <img src="/sites/default/files/inline-images/Picture3_0.jpg" data-entity-uuid="01ff78b3-c982-43dc-b677-6bebbdab1d48" data-entity-type="file" alt="Learners analysing the foodbank" width="780" height="585"> The learners began their exciting day with an introduction from Lucy, the Foodbank Warehouse manager. She explained their struggle in the movement of food products around the warehouse and explained how they could use the students help. This meant that the students were fortunate enough to get involved in a real-life project to solve the foodbanks problem!After being split into three groups and being assigned a task, the students carried out a detailed measurement survey of the entire warehouse – this included the ground floor, welfare and office areas and the first-floor mezzanine structure. Lucy then provided them with her project requirements which involved the budget. <img src="/sites/default/files/inline-images/Picture2_0.jpg" data-entity-uuid="90b65845-320d-4d22-bfec-edd7edfd5ae4" data-entity-type="file" alt="Learners moving trolleys with food around the warehouse" width="764" height="573"> After a day of exciting events, the students returned to the Weson College classroom and eagerly began using a Computer Aided Design software called Revitt.
