Our level 2 sports students posing for a picture in our sports hall

Our sport level 2 students showcased their dedication and organisational skills as they successfully executed a multi-sport event aimed at local SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) schools. The event was the final step in a year-long project for the students, who were responsible for planning and running it.

Throughout the year, the students carefully planned every detail of the event, from inviting participating schools and conducting risk assessments to health and safety briefings.

David Crossman at VANS (voluntary North Somerset) provided the students generous support in reaching out to schools, supporting the students to manage their event confidently and determinedly. Their dedication was further underscored by the delivery of a practice event before Christmas, allowing them to refine their strategies and make informed decisions for the main event.

"The project-based unit has been an incredible learning experience for our sport level 2 students," remarked Jack Gadd, Sports Academy and Enrichment Manager. "Not only did it offer them the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, but it also gave them a sense of responsibility and ownership over their work. The success of the multi-sport event shows how hard they worked and how committed they were”.

The event, which brought together students from local SEND schools, not only fostered a spirit of inclusivity and teamwork but also provided a platform for participants to showcase their athletic talents and skills across various sports.

This project forms part of the Sports and Fitness Careers Excellence Hub. The College has fourteen sector-specific Career Excellence Hubs, which evidence our dedication to supporting both employers and learners in achieving their future goals. By creating a seamless connection between industry and education, we enable learners to acquire not only the essential skills and knowledge but also the professional networks necessary to excel in their chosen fields.

the police outreach team standing in front of their presentation

This week, we received a visit from the Avon and Somerset Police’s Outreach Team, providing an invaluable opportunity for selected tutor groups to gain firsthand insights into law enforcement careers and operations.

During the visit, students were treated to an engaging presentation where officers shared their personal experiences, shedding light on the diverse roles and recruitment systems within the police force. From patrol officers to specialised units, the students were introduced to the array of career paths available within law enforcement.

One of the highlights of the visit was the interactive showcase of police equipment. Students had the unique chance to handle various items, including helmets and even a stab vest, gaining a tangible understanding of the tools utilised in daily police work. This hands-on experience allowed them to appreciate the practical aspects of a career in law enforcement and sparked curiosity about the responsibilities officers undertake to ensure public safety.

The event provided a platform for students to engage with law enforcement professionals, ask questions, and explore potential career paths in the field of policing.

"We are grateful to the local police department for their collaboration and commitment to educating our students," Di Dourley remarked. "Visits like these are instrumental in broadening horizons and encouraging students to consider the impactful role they can play in society through a career in law enforcement."

Stressed female student taking an exam

As exam season draws near, everyone is gearing up for the challenges ahead. However, with the pressure mounting, it's essential to know how to handle feelings of stress and anxiety. That's why we've compiled a set of practical tips to help you navigate the exam period with confidence and composure.

First and foremost, create a conducive workspace. Ensure you have enough space and comfort to ease the stress of studying. A well-lit room can boost your mood, while removing distractions can enhance focus. And if the pressure starts to mount, take a break to reorganise your study area – a tidy desk can work wonders for your mindset.

Remember, exams are just one part of your journey and don't define your worth. Employers value attitude and transferable skills as much as grades, so keep things in perspective.

For those prone to feeling overwhelmed, consider creating a "calm kit." Fill it with items that bring you comfort and relaxation, like cherished memories, soothing teas, or inspirational quotes. Having these essentials on hand can provide a welcome respite during stressful moments.

As the big day approaches, heed advice from researchers to stay calm and focused. Avoid caffeine, opt for a light meal, and dress comfortably to minimise distractions. And if nerves start to fray, don't hesitate to take a pause – close your eyes, breathe deeply, and regroup.

But perhaps most importantly, don't go it alone. Reach out to a trusted friend or counsellor who can lend a sympathetic ear. Talking through your concerns can help alleviate stress and provide much-needed support.

If you're struggling to cope, remember there are resources available. Whether it's seeking guidance from campus welfare teams, scheduling a chat with your tutor, or attending revision sessions, help is within reach.

When planning your study schedule, prioritise self-care. Take regular breaks, incorporate light exercise, and make time for relaxation. And as bedtime approaches, unwind with activities like reading or a soothing bath to ensure a restful night's sleep.

Finally, remember there's no one-size-fits-all approach to exam prep. Experiment with different techniques to find what works best for you. And above all, take care of your well-being – because a healthy mind is key to exam success.

The Welfare Team at Weston College are here to offer 1:1 support, advice, guidance and information. If you have any concerns, you can see more information by visiting our Welfare page where you can also contact them personally.

Additionally, you can visit our Student Wellbeing SharePoint Site, a central platform that provides helpful tools to support mental health and well-being.

So, as you embark on your exam journey, remember these tips to manage stress and overwhelm. With the right mindset and support system, you've got everything you need to excel. Good luck!

One Message, Different Voices

Take a look at this powerful film made by the staff of Weston College to show how important it is for everyone from different backgrounds to be included. The film shares heartfelt stories and interviews with a diverse group of staff, showing how accepting different identities and backgrounds can make a big difference. Its purpose is to encourage viewers to think about their own biases and work towards making our community more welcoming to all. We invite everyone, regardless of their background, to join us and be a part of our journey toward a more inclusive future.

Halo workplace logo

Our workplace champions the right of staff to embrace all Afro-hairstyles. We acknowledge that Afro-textured hair is an important part of our Black employees’ racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance. We celebrate Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, braids, cornrows, fades, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps. In this workplace, we recognise and celebrate our colleagues’ identities. We are a community built on an ethos of equality and respect where hair texture and style have no bearing on an employee's ability to succeed.
